Medical Women mark menstrual hygiene day 2017

The Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Akwa Ibom State branch has marked the Menstrual Hygiene Day 2017. The event is held every 28th day of the 5th month of the year (since a menstrual period occurs every 28 days and lasts for 5 days). 

The day is set aside globally to create awareness on menstrual health and promote menstrual hygiene. The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘education about menstruation changes everything’.

To mark the event in Akwa Ibom State, the Medical Women Association (MWAN), Akwa Ibom State branch with the support of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Akwa Ibom State branch visited the Federal Government Girls College, Ikot-Obio Itong, Mkpat-Enin LGA for an awareness and sensitization campaign. 
The event was attended by the Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State branch, Dr Aniekeme Uwah, The Asst. Secretary, Dr Ikanke Mathias, The President of MWAN, Dr Emem Abraham, the Chairman of the planning committee, Dr Tiemah Akpabio and members of MWAN.

Others in attendance include the spouse of the NMA Chairman, Barr Aver A. Ishoribo-Uwah, The Principal of the school, members of staff and ex students of the school.

Activities carried out included;
A lecture on menstruation and Sexual Violence.
Presentation of hundreds of free sanitary pads to the students and a demonstration on the proper usage.
An interactive session between the students and resource persons.
