AKHA: Social Housing Scheme pass 2nd Reading

AKHA: Social Housing Scheme pass 2nd Reading

Following the recent 2nd reading of a bill for a law to establish State Social Housing Scheme initiated by the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Barr. Onofiok Luke, the member representing Oron/Udung Uko State Constituency, Hon. Effiong Bassey while joining in the debate commended the author of the bill and the Speaker Barr. Luke for the timeliness of the bill.

According to him, housing is paramount to human existence as it ranks among the top three priorities of basic needs. “Social Housing is a policy of government aimed at providing affordable houses for the generality of its citizens”.

He said the bill when passed will ensure the provision of certain elements of Social Housing like affordability, accessibility and legal security of tenure.

The Oron, Udung/Uko mouth piece reasoned that from United Kingdom to United States of America, Brazil, France, Singapore and most of other developing economies Social Housing for the citizenry has been one of the initiatives which cradles government’s development programmes for the middle class and for low income earners.

On creating an agency to take care of this scheme, the lawmaker reasoned that there should be no need for the creation of another agency, rather, the Housing Ministry should take charge of this development as a supervisory body in order to reserve more funds rather than creating an additional agency.
