Quality Leadership: Niger Delta Youths honour  Rector, MAN, Oron
As stakeholders in the maritime industry fall over themselves in appreciating the result-oriented leadership style of Ambassador (Dr.) Joshua Okpo in Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Youths of the Niger Delta region have honoured the Rector of the Academy Amb. Dr. Joshua Okpo with BEST ACADEMIC MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD.

Presenting the award to the Rector at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja on Tuesday, during the 6th Niger Delta Achievers Merit Award, the President of the body Comrade Derick Akakabota, hinted that the choice of Dr. Joshua Okpo for the award was informed by the Rector’s patriotic and undeterred commitment to the repositioning of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron in the comity of Maritime institutions in the world.

Comrade Akakabota explained that prior to Dr. Joshua Okpo’s regime, the Academy has had the history of perennial infrastructural deficit, adding that Dr. Joshua Okpo’s administration has recorded tremendous progress by way of all-round-development, has evident in the provision of state-of-the-art infrastructure, construction of internal roads, hostels for cadets, lecture halls, training and retraining of staff and provision of modern simulators and other facilities to enhance maritime studies.


The Niger Delta Youths’ boss, also lauded the effort of the Rector in engaging in fruitful collaborative discussions with renowned maritime institutions across the world, to explore possible areas of interest in the training of cadets for global competitiveness.

Today, Dr. Joshua Okpo’s led administration in MAN, Oron has entrenched sound academic culture in Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron and is already putting viable infrastructure in place in preparation for the smooth take-off of the envisaged degree programmes, when the edict establishing the institution is amended. He called on Amb. Dr. Joshua Okpo to remain resolute and undeterred in transforming the Academy to the admiration of all Nigerians. He however prevailed on Muhammad Buhari’s administration to increase the funding of the academy to enable the authorities of the institution secure sea time for the cadets as practiced in other maritime institutions in the world.

Responding, after receiving the award on behalf of the Rector, Mr. Peter Netson, MAN, Oron, Abuja Liaison Officer, expressed gratitude to the Advisory Board of Niger Delta Achievers’ Merit Award for the honour done his boss, describing it as well deserved. Mr. Netson assured that the award will further spur the Rector up in his concerted and unwavering commitment in making MAN, Oron, the FIRST and the BEST in the comity of maritime institutions in the world.
