Mkpat Enin lawmaker wants illicit drinks banned in Akwa Ibom
The member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Engineer Otobong Ndem over the week moved a motion for the ban of illicit drinks production and consumption in the state.

The lawmaker made the move last Tuesday during plenary session of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. The motion was contained in the order paper of the sitting for the day but was referred to the next sitting which is billed for Tuesday 30th June, 2015 by the Speaker, Hon. Aniekan Uko for deliberation.

The motion according to health experts who exchanged views with our correspondents described it as a welcome development to the State. They opined that when the motion gets the light of the day, it will seek to promote the health and overall well being of the people in the state. They said also that issues of drunkenness in the state and some illicit drinks induced health challenges will be a thing of the past. They commended Otobong Ndem for the move and expressed optimism that the motion will find its way to the hearts of the people and the lawmakers.

In a chat with THE INK Newspapers, the Mkpat Enin lawmaker said he had to consider the motion because some persons in the State are in the habit of producing illicit alcoholic drinks illegally which according to him is very harmful to the body and that those who also patronize such drinks end up becoming nuisance not only to themselves but members of their immediate environment. He noted that Akwa Ibom State needs to be proactive so as to avoid what consumption of illicit drinks has done to some persons in States like Bayelsa, Ondo, and Rivers.

Engr. Otobong Ndem further maintained that Akwa Ibom State will be better for all when illicit drinks no longer find their ways into the state.
