How fire burnt down UNIUYO female hostel

BY VICTOR UFOT

Fire last Saturday morning razed down about three rooms in UNIUYO female hostel hall one located at the Annex campus of the institution.

Although no casualty was recorded, the inferno destroyed personal belongings of and credentials of students who resides in the affected rooms. Our findings revealed that room 9, and 11 were partially affected while room 10 was the worst hit.

Some of the affected students who spoke with our reporter said the blaze was caused by a socket which was malfunctioning and that led to the incident “The incident was caused by socket in our room which was not good, we had complained to the portals and the accommodation officer but nothing was done about it, so this morning we saw fire coming out from the socket”.

Another student who stays in the affected hostel but refused her name to be mentioned in print also confirmed that the incident was caused by electrical fault, “the fire was caused by electrical fault and which we had complained to the hall master and portals but no action was taken” she called for the sack of hall master in charge of the hall. “The accommodation officer should be relieved of that position because this would have been averted if he had taken necessary steps.

Meanwhile the management of the school has allegedly attributed the cause of the inferno to the use of water heaters and other banned electrical appliances by some students residing in the hostel.

It will be recalled that the same hostel about a year ago was affected by fire incident; our reporter also gathered that the students were made to face a disciplinary panel over the incidence, some students have admonish the management to proffer a lasting solution to such incidence to avoid a recurrence.
