Campus journalism: UNIUYO to revive union BY AKANIMO KINGSLEY
In a move to give journalism its rightful place on campus, the Students’ Union body, in collaboration with stakeholders of campus journalism in the University of Uyo have decided to revive the defunct Nigerian Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ). This is in line with the yearning of campus journalists in UNIUYO to bring orderliness and foster the promotion of the fourth realm of power on campus.
To ensure the success of the plan, the SUG directorate of information had set up a committee to see to the formal reformation of NUCJ in the school premises.

The chairman of the committee, Comr. Ubong Sampson in a meeting with members expressed satisfaction and readiness to bring back the dignity of students involved in journalism. He urged the members not to relent in their duties, stressing that nobody should be allowed to hijack or intimidate campus journalists. On his part, the committee secretary, Comr. Endiong John while re-stating his commitment to the course, emphasized the need to come up with a new constitution for the union.

Reacting to the proposed NUCJ revival, another committee member, Comr. Anthony Esin who is also the President, Association of Communication Arts Students (ACAS), UNIUYO chapter, posited that his association be made an integral part of NUCJ especially at the helm of affairs.

It would be recalled that Corporate Campus Journalism had been in existence in the University of Uyo in the days of Nsibiet John, the Chief Editor of THE INK newspaper, who was a former secretary to the body before he became the president. Comr. Iniobong Ememobong, the S.A to Governor Akpabio on Students’ Matters was also a strong member of NUCJ in his university days.

Meanwhile, preparation is in top gear to formalize the re-branding of the union in the Tuskers’ Republic.
