The spate of indecent dressing among students BY JOY BASSEY

                                       
Indecent dressing stands out as one of the social anomalies which has negatively impacted on the moral consciousness of the youths, and destroyed their sense of moral judgment. The battle against indecent dressing is an issue which has generated controversy overtime; not only in Nigeria, but in other countries. This has led to the definition of dress codes for students by some higher institutions of learning, in their bid to put indecent dressing on check.

At the national level, our leaders and some concerned individuals have tried to initiate bills and laws that would regulate our general conduct, dressing and public behavior. Though, some of these bills have been worked-on, some others are yet to see the light of a healthy deliberation. This, then questions the competency of parents, schools, guardians and role models in their duty of protecting the society’s norms and values. Can they confidently proclaim that they have done enough to curb the vogue of the expanding trend in indecent dressing?

Phone thieves caught in UNIUYO campus BY GLORY ODOEMELAM

Two men were caught in the early hours of the  Friday 14th February, stealing phones and gadgets from the female hostels of the University of Uyo town campus.

According to an eye witness, the men were caught by the school authorities as they attempted to jump over the school gate with their loot.

Another eye witness disclosed that several female students ran out of their hostels to have a glimpse of  the “window men” when they head that they had been caught but the school authorities took the men away from the angry students for fear that they might be  lynched by the already furious students.
This incident which is the second to occur in the school campus is yet to receive the necessary reaction from the school authorities to forestall a future occurrence.

Campus journalism: UNIUYO to revive union BY AKANIMO KINGSLEY

 

In a move to give journalism its rightful place on campus, the Students’ Union body, in collaboration with stakeholders of campus journalism in the University of Uyo have decided to revive the defunct Nigerian Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ). This is in line with the yearning of campus journalists in UNIUYO to bring orderliness and foster the promotion of the fourth realm of power on campus.
To ensure the success of the plan, the SUG directorate of information had set up a committee to see to the formal reformation of NUCJ in the school premises.

N.M.C. end 5 day training for maths teachers in Uyo BY GODWIN SAM

The National Mathematical Centre (NMC) on Friday 24th January, 2014, rounded off the 5-day training workshop for mathematics teachers at La-Mems Hotel, 40 Nkemba Street in Uyo. The event organized by the NMC in collaboration with Exxon Mobil for selected mathematics teachers from public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State began on Monday 20th January, 2014 and had fifty (50) teachers in attendance.

Performing the closing ceremony, the State Commissioner for Education, Prof. (Mrs.) Atim Antai, on behalf of the Government of Akwa Ibom State commended Exxon Mobil and the National Mathematical Centre in Abuja for partnering to institute the workshop to assist and mobilize teachers towards improved academic performance especially in the area of mathematics which she said is the key to the study of all sciences.
