Manufacturers in the State have sent a passionate appeal to the State Governor, Chief (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio to patronize products manufactured in the State which according to them, are among the best products in the market.
The manufacturers under the aegis of Block Molders Association of Nigeria; Water Producers Association of Akwa Ibom State; Aluminum Product Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Chapter; Paint Manufacturers Association of Nigeria; Tissue Producers Association of Akwa Ibom State etc, made this appeal during the interactive session at the one day official visit of the Director General of Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Joseph Ikemefuna Odumodu, at the organization’s State headquarters at the Federal Secretariat on Tuesday 4th, January, 2014.
The State coordinator of SON, Mr. Papanye Don-Pedro who received the visiting Director General alongside his entourage introduced the product manufacturers in the State to the visitors and commended the manufacturers also for coming out to receive them.
In his message at the gathering, the SON DG, Dr. Joseph Odumodu observed that quality is the in-thing in the world today and urged the manufacturers to up their game by producing products of high quality in order to meet required standards and certification by the Standard Organization of Nigeria.
He also expressed impression at the number of manufactures the state has which he said is in contrast to what he previously assumed and thanked the state coordinator, Mr. Don- Pedro for going a good job in the State.
The manufacturers raised a lot of concerns ranging from poor patronage of their products by the government and their contractors, inability to access credit facilities from the Bank of Industry, proliferation of uncertified and substandard products in the State, importation of inferior and dangerous materials amongst others. The D.G. in his response encouraged them to continue producing high quality products while assuring them of a solution.
Also speaking on the occasion, General Etukudo, the pioneer D.G. of SON commended Dr. Odumodu for finding time to visit Akwa Ibom and for the innovation he has brought to the organization. He also advised the manufacturers to survey an environment before establishing a factory to be sure of the raw materials they can get around and what it would cost to import/transport goods over long distances. He however commended the State Governor for constructing roads which will aid the effective transportation of goods.
