Activities marking the Geography Students Association (GEOSA) week of the Department of Geography and Natural Resources Management were brought to a close on Friday 25th September with a pageantry/ banquet and awards night held at the Onyeama Ugochukwu auditorium of the University of Uyo, Uyo.
Organized by the (GEOSA) for its students, the event began on Monday 21st of September 2015 with the finals of the HOD cup/tournament played by students of the department; followed by a debate competition (GEOSA Speak out Challenge) highlighting the Difference Between Human and Physical Geography as well as their roles in the environment” on Tuesday 22nd; talent hunt/carnival float took place on Wednesday 23rd, cooking competition was on Thursday 24th and the pageantry display/banquet/awards ended the event on Friday 25th September 2015.
Speaking at the awards night, the President of GEOSA, Sir Felix Paul appreciated lecturers of the department for coming out in their numbers to grace the event. He also thanked the students for having supported his government and for giving their cooperation to ensure the smooth occurrence of the week-long event. He lauded the Department of Geography and Natural Resources Management for having found the need to freely tutor its students and engage them in benefiting excursions outside the state.
The students’ President stated that the essence of the event was not just to foster unity among Geography students but to mark the beginning of a new dawn and to establish a foundation that others will build upon. “We are moving GEOSA from where it was to where it should be”. He said
Speaking with our correspondent, GEOSA’s Secretary-General, Miss Ndifreke Cyril, expressed satisfaction at the outcome of the event, saying it was all-encompassing. She noted that although there had been in time past GEOSA weeks, this was the first of its kind spanning across a full week.
The event featured a unity dance by students of the department, award presentation to deserving lecturers and students, cutting of the outgoing students’ cake and other interesting packages. Winners of the talent hunt and cooking competition were also awarded.
At the end of the event, a 300 level student of the department went home with a 21 inches flat screen television as the prize for the debate competition.
Present at the occasion were the Department’s Head, Dr. Robert Ekpenyong; Director of International Programmes, University of Uyo, Professor Ekanem Ekanem; Staff Adviser, Dr. Iniobong Ansa as well as lecturers of the Department of Geography and Natural Resources Management.
