A 13 – member Millennium Development Goals (MDG) committee was inaugurated by Ukanafun Local Government last Tuesday. The committee is to take inventory and take a general survey of available infrastructure so that the Local Government would partner the state and the federal Governments to provide the basic amenities the people lack behind.
Speaking during the inauguration, the council Chairman, Apostle Sylvester Udokang charged the members to express commitment and total sense of responsibility in the discharge of their duties. He stated that the aim is to expedite development among the rural dwellers as this would engender economic boom and wealth creation among Ukanafun people.
According the technical assistant on MDGs in Ukanafun, Mr Ubong Ben the essence of the committee is to develop a scheme for development of the strategic areas that are germane to the needs of the people. Such areas include health, water, electricity, other basic infrastructure.
He explained that it would involve inventory – taking, facility – mapping and general survey of available infrastructure. It is from these data that MDG would assess and provide the basic needs of the people. On funding of the projects, the technical assistant said that the federal government would provide 50 per cent, the state contributes 30 per cent while the Local Government is to make 20 per cent of the fund available.
The technical aide also explained that setting up of the planning and technical committees is one of the criteria for the achievement of the MDG’s objectives for the citizenry. The planning committee is headed by the Council Chairman, Apostle Udokang; while Mr. Ubong Ben is in charge of Technical Committee.
