UNIUYO GST Crisis: Students give conditions for peace

UNIUYO GST Crisis: Students give conditions for peace
…say remove the Director, give us make-up test else we attack GST unit
…we are prepared and ready for them – CSO

Despite the University of Uyo’s position in the recently published advertorial over the alleged feud between some students of the institution and the staff of the General Studies Unit of the institution, the aggrieved students have insisted that except the present Director of the General Studies Unit, Dr. E. E. Joshua and his staff are change and a make-up test given to the affected students, they will neither remain calm nor change their mind from burning down the GST unit as earlier warned.

The authority of the University of Uyo, THE INK, learnt had over the weekend published a rejoinder on the recent media report that some students of the institution are calling for an urgent removal of the Director of GST of the school accusing him of and his staff of incompetency.

But the aggrieved students through their spokesperson who insisted that his name should not be mentioned told our reporter that they (students) are not interested in the described as abracadabra contained in the UNIUYO’s rejoinder as it does not meet the students’ demand, stressing that, the University authority have failed to address the issue at hand and rather resort to unnecessary lamentation.

“We have read what they published in some Newspaper claiming to be a reaction to our complaint. The truth is, they have not said anything. The acclaimed GST Director is incompetent, his non-teaching staff are not qualify to work in a University and all we are saying is that the they should be removed immediately to avoid subsequent occurrence of the similar or related blunders in students’ document.
After removing them, we should be given a make-up test in all the GST courses so that at the end of the semester, they will not come to ask us of money for grades.

But if the University refuse to do that, what happen on June 12 last year will repeat itself,” the students said.

Further, the students say they are ready to take the case as far as they could to seek justice if the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Comfort Ekpo whom they described as competent and student-friendly leader fail to listen to the plight of the students.

Meanwhile, checks by THE INK indicate that the students’ demands may not be granted as the said GST Director is said to be a kitchen cabinet member of the Comfort Ekpo’s administration.
When contacted over the threat by the students to burn down the GST Unit, The Chief Security Officer of the University of Uyo, Col. Efik said he wondered why the students refused to channel their complaint through the Student Union Government of the school, saying that it is obvious that the aggrieved students are making case out of nothing.

While saying he has no jurisdiction to speak on the academic matters of the University, he told our reporter that his security team are fully prepared and ready for the students’ attack even as he advised them to disembark from violent as it is not the solution to whatever problem they might have had with the GST directorate of the school, assuring that both the security team and the University authority are on top of the situation.
