It is very disheartening to know that an Ibibio man in person of Paul Ekpo can discern so low, by allowing himself to be tossed hitter and thither. Instead of thanking God for being alive and behaving well, he seems to appear more irresponsible. The populace are disappointed, but not surprised at the brazen manner Akpabio’s led government is manipulating him. Paul Ekpo left the party in doubt of the insincerity which created an atmosphere of confusion.
The truth is that for so long, corruption, indecision and maladministration pervaded the State PDP and a cancerous growth existed which ate into the very heart of the party thus, making the death of the party inevitable.
He had been found guilty of abusing his office and corruption, and instead of bearing the responsibility of laying a good foundation for a sustained political system which can stand the test of time in a manner that political crisis will not become a threat to the State’s continuous existence as a single entity to ensure a smooth and orderly transition from one government to another; he became a “boy-boy” to someone who has no genuine advise to offer. Ekpo has no genuine demonstration of moderation and self control in pursuing sectional ends in the overall interest of the party. Due to this attitude of his, the general tempo in the PDP slackened and the public became restless, fretting and beginning to complain aloud about the unsatisfactory situation.
He is a man lacking in courage and will power and has failed to give the party a determined and purposeful leadership. He wasted no time implementing any order or directive given to him by Governor Akpabio and the result was the gigantic scheme of choosing an ordained candidate in the person of Mr. Udom Emmanuel, and this surely deserves a special mention in the chronicle of his achievements.
Paul Ekpo failed to develop self-regulating political mechanism through which political tension can be resolved. This may be the formation of a body consisting of all shades of political opinion or through the mobilization of the traditional political culture peculiar to Akwa Ibom State. Politicians in the ruling party have been torn apart by internal conflicts over the control of State party. The political institution which emerged two decades ago have now become decadent and corrupt; writers and commentators have asserted various possible means to quench the burning fire spear-headed by our able and transformational Governor by theory, but to no avail. The Governor has his own selfish and personal ambition and merely wishes to use his office to gain his ends. Although tribal supremacy was certainly alien to the Governor’s thoughts, but that seed of temptation planted in the minds of the people will never germinate. The point I wish to emphasize is that it is not easy to postulate a personal theory that will apply uniformly to all in the State.
For now, there is a sign of impending disaster, the elites have protested via publications and have implored the President and the National Chairman of the party to intervene and save what is left of the state by ordering an immediate stop to these inciting acts as well as the declaration of an ordained candidate.
Ibibio plot is always slow, deliberate and systematic, but my appeal is that such political philosophy should immediately be put to standstill, because the alternative is for them to be enslaved for an indefinite period.
But for Paul Ekpo, he can only retain that position, unless he proves to the world that the existence of a mortal God is a fallacy. It has become clear that Paul Ekpo is under the apron strings of Governor Akpabio, and has failed to realise the foolishness of his obstinacy. This betrayal thus, deserves punishment and he should be ruthlessly dealt with for “sitting on the fence”. The populace will soon hail a change, with absolute joy and optimism about the emergence of a new State leader of the Party who would be free from corruption and other vices. The Annangs are carefully getting themselves into strategically important and bureaucratic positions, while the Ibibios are being denied any opportunity and treated with ignominy. The end shall justify the means.
