The Fortune Schools, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Friday last week held its 2014 graduation ceremony. The graduation ceremony, the 12th in the series, saw 35 students passing out from Fortune High School while the remaining 37 graduated in the primary school section.
In an address entitled: “The Journey of Remarkable Progress”, the Founding Chairman of the institution and Senator for Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District Senator Aloysius Etok, expressed delight that the school has “waxed from strength to strength”.
While restating the readiness of the institution to partner government in improving academic standard in the country, Senator Etok, represented by the Proprietress of the school, Mrs. Etok urged parents to be part of the success story of Fortune Schools System by sending their children to the school.
“From academics to sports, and other schools activities, Fortune has severally represented the state and also won best prize in state, zonal and national competitions. This gives us the much needed encouragement to invest more. Accordingly, our huge investment in proving up-to-date and high standard (teaching and learning) facilities that are of global reckoning is to ensure that Fortune is one among the contemporary world-class schools around.
“We are also guided to ensure that Fortune, after 12 years, can at any time be celebrated with laurels within and beyond the shores of the country in any organized competition. Fortune is our pride. It is also a pride to the state, and of course, a pride to the nation.
“I am pleased therefore, to call on you to join, and remain a happy Fortune family member. Viewed from a distance, it may be expensive but, on a closer look, you will discover that, the charged, when matched with the facilities provided, are far cheaper than the other anywhere around. Yet, you get the best that we give,” he said.
The principal of fortune high school, Mr. Mathew Udo described the graduating students and pupils as unique, having been the first batch of the products of the new senior/junior secondary school curriculum.
Mr. Udo expressed confidence that the graduating students have been repositioned to be self-relevant, charging them to remain good ambassadors of Fortune Schools System.
“The philosophy of the new Senior Secondary Education curriculum is that every senior secondary education graduate should have been well prepared for higher education as well as acquired relevant functional trade/entrepreneurship skills needed for poverty eradication, job creation and wealth generation and in the process strengthened further, the foundation for ethical, moral and civic values acquired at the basic education level.
“As a school, we have not only exposed the students to the structure of the curriculum, we made sure it is implemented to the later. With the way our students have been performing in both internal examinations and external competitions, we have no doubt in our minds that the aims and objectives of the New Senior Secondary Education curriculum have been achieved,” he noted.
In a lecture, the Dean, Faculty of Environmental Studies, University of Uyo, Prof. Godfred Udo urged the graduating students to be adventurous and seek knowledge with a view to be transformed.
Prof. Udo advocated a reform in Nigeria education system which he said encourages uniform teaching without taking into consideration the needs and intelligence level of the students.
The Chairman on the occasion, Elder Patrick Albert commended Fortune Schools System reading and writing and advocated public-private partnership for improved educational system.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Atim Antai represented by Assistant Director in the Ministry, Mrs. Esther Unoh advised the graduating students tobe of good conducts while in the outside world in order to be good ambassadors of the school. She thanked the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio for rebranding education in Akwa Ibom State.
To spice up the event, the Fortune cultural group took the audience in a very thrilling cultural display. The event also featured the cutting of the anniversary cake.
Highpoint of the occasion was the presentation of awards and prizes to deserving students and pupils.
