Sensing the imminent defeat of the All Progressives Congress’ governorship candidate in the state, Obong Nsima Ekere, caucus members of Ibibio extraction in the party have reportedly deserted the former deputy governor.
THE INK gathered from impeccable sources that following the massive defeat recorded by the party in last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections, chieftains of the party have made a volte face in their support for the former NDDC Managing Director.
With the loss suffered by Senator Godswill Akpabio, sources say top shots of the APC are demoralised, adding that most of them are contemplating pitching their tents with Governor Udom Emmanuel and the Peoples Democratic Party.
Saturday’s results indicate that the deputy governorship candidate of the party, Amadu Attai, lost in his polling unit along with the state chairman of the party, Ini Okopido who also lost in his unit.
The results, a source said, has not gone down well with members of the party who feel the defeats faced by ranking members of the party in their units is a clear indication that they are politically weak and ineffective.
To worsen the fortunes of the APC, Obong Nsima Ekere also lost in his local government area of Ikot Abasi to PDP in the Presidential election. Nsima Ekere could not muster any influence as his party secured 5, 710 as against 8, 353 polled by the PDP.
The outcome of the polls, a source within the party said, has dampened the confidence of the party ahead of the governorship election on March 9, given that no member of the party delivered his local government area to the APC.
THE INK understands that high ranking members of the party from Ibibio extraction are rethinking their membership of the party owing to what a source said is the imminent defeat of the APC in the state.
A source who spoke in confidence said barring any last minute twist, some members of the APC will abandon the party and its governorship candidate.
“My brother, so many people will certainly abandon Nsima Ekere. Most people only came for what they can get, but with what befell the party on Saturday, coupled with the fact that he’s no longer in NDDC, it’s unlikely that they’ll remain in the party.
All candidates of the APC for Senatorial Seats and House of Representatives lost out in their bids to represent their constituencies at the National Assembly last Saturday. The governorship election in the state holds on Saturday 9 March.
