League of Veteran Journalists to reposition journalism practice in A’Ibom …frowns at Incessant Cases of Yellow Journalism

Worried by the incessant cases of abuses and infringement on the rights of public officers and privileged persons in the state by some sections of the press, the League of Veteran Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council has scheduled a crucial meeting for Wednesday, 29th January, 2014.

In a press release jointly signed by the state chairman of the League, Chief Emmanuel Esifa, and the secretary, Mr. Gregory Udo, and made available to our newsroom, the media elders will converge at the Nigerian Union of Journalists Press Centre by 2pm on Wednesday, 29th January for the meeting which will discuss among other things, the way forward for a credible and excellent media practice by editors and reporters in the state, and will also usher in the needed respect and decorum for the senior members of the pen fraternity.

According to the release, the meeting will also fashion out ways and means of bringing in the much cherished and robust professionalism experience of senior journalists and other media professionals in the state as a prelude to forging a sustainable, rewarding and beneficial partnership with the state council of the NUJ led by Elder Patrick Albert, League of Publishers which has Obong Uko Umoh, publisher of Pulse Group of Newspapers as the chairman, as well as executives of the Newspaper Distributors and Vendors Association in the state.


Meanwhile, the state chairman of the League, Chief Emmanuel Esifa has clarified the major qualifications for the registration of new members into the League.

Chief Esifa, also a member of the State NUJ Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, who was briefing newsmen at the NUJ press centre disclosed that membership of the League is not limited to only retired journalists, but senior members and elders of the profession, with at least 25 years of serious, credible and excellent media practice who can also showcase their abundant experience for the younger journalists.

Chief Esifa particularly pointed out that deputy directors in the Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation (both radio and television service) as well as the deputy directors in the State Ministry of Information are eligible to register as members of the League. Other senior editors/publishers can also join the League in order to enhance the profession.

The Chairman similarly affirmed that senior editors in both the Pioneer and other reputable newspapers and radio stations in the state are also qualified to be members of the League which has as its main objectives: to encourage younger journalists to uphold high ethical and professional standards in the profession.

Chief Esifa also announced that the formal inauguration of Akwa Ibom State Media Elders and Editors’ Association (AKSMEEA) and its Board of Trustees (BOT) will hold on the third week of February, and appealed to senior journalists, editors and elders of the profession with not less than 25 years of cogent experience to join the Association which he emphasized will be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission for the purpose of actualizing journalism in its proper nomenclature and protocol as the Fourth Estate of the Government.
