As the battle for the political position in 2015 gathers momentum. A vibrant lawyer and member and member representing Urueffong /Oruko state constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Barr. Bassey Etienam urges the people of Akwa Ibom State in particular and Nigerians in General to put the continuous unity, peace and corporate existence of nation as their priority above partisan politics.
In the same vein the lawmaker cautions against any form of violence and blood shed stressing that Nigerians through years of co-habitation and marriages are virtually interwoven in one close knitted relationship or the other.
The lawmaker who stated this during media interaction with journalists in Uyo maintained that politics and public service is a call to serve the society and people and not to destroy it.
Speaking on the crisis that have rocked the peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in recent times Barr. Etienam expressed hope that the party will overcome her challenges opining that the party has enough internal mechanism to resolve her differences.
He dismissed the All Progressive Congress (APC) as a viable or strong opposition party to the PDP noting that party has no focus, cohesion or direction. “It is unfortunate that APC are begging aggrieved PDP members and wooing them today to swell their ranks but sadly majority of them are those whom they earlier described as thieves and rogues that destroyed Nigeria, what an “Irony” .
The lawmaker regretted that Nigerian political parties have no serious Ideological inclinations maintaining that mere change of garment from “suit to agbada” or movement of a politician from one party to another does not change the person or character of the said politician. “Most of the people who claimed to have joined the APC will soon return to the PDP” he added.
Etienam, a Senate hopeful further comical enthused, “it is only a man who is already afflicted with the dreaded HIV that embarks on reckless promiscuity with different women since he has nothing to fear or loose” berating APC for the blind recruitment of aggrieved PDP members to their party.
On his Aspiration to go to the senate, Barr. Bassey Etienam said “my candidature offers new and refreshing ideas not Ideologies that have become absolute for a modern society” saying that his candidature is a choice for a balance between the older generation and the present breed.
He describes himself as a servant leader eager to unite the State and Country in confronting and surmounting the challenges of Statehood and Nationhood.
In his words ”I hope for a district which we all feel part of in whose future we all have a Stake, a Senatorial District in which what I meant for Urueffong/Oruko is what I want for Eket and what I want for Ikot Abasi is what I want for Eastern Obolo”.
The vibrant lawmaker who told Newsmen that Oro Nation was qualified to produce both Senator and Governor in 2015 and maintained that he was not in any way working against Oro Governorship because of his ambition to go to the Senate in 2015.
“I have told people that Oro nation could both produce Senator and Governor and we have able sons and daughters to handle these positions. Do not forget that the last time an Oro man went to the Senate was thirty years ago through Late Senator Victor Akan.
Also because we are in Eket Senatorial District, we can contest for the governorship slot and get but let me say that should giving Oro people the Governorship means I surrender my Senate pursuit, I will surrender my ticket for us to produce the Governor in 2015", Etienam explained.
Barr. Etienam however advised Oro people against limiting the pursuit for the Governorship slot in 2015 to an Oro agenda stressing “where I differ with some people is that I don’t believe the issue of zoning should be limited to Oro.
Oro belong to Eket Senatorial District where there are other smaller minorities such as Eastern Obolo, Ibeno, Esit Eket, so if we must succeed in our contest for Governorship we must Co-operate as Eket Senatorial District and move on to pick the best among ourselves”. He cautioned the people against playing up ethnic sentiments in the buildup of the elections saying that it could lead to unwanted distraction of innocent lives and property.
