2015: Governorship must go to Eket Senatorial District – Governor Akpabio

2015: Governorship must go to Eket Senatorial District – Governor Akpabio

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio on Thursday, 2nd January, 2014, declared that in 2015, the governorship of the State must go to Eket Senatorial District; adding that anyone who prays to the contrary was praying against the will of God.

The Governor made this known at a one day solemn assembly organized by the State Government held on the Ibom Hall Grounds along IBB Avenue in Uyo. The theme of this year’s event was “The Faithfulness of God”.

The event was organized to usher in year 2014 and to officially hand over the State to God as is the tradition of the present administration in the State for the past 6 years.

Governor Godswill Akpabio read the only Bible lesson for the occasion which was taken from Psalm 146 from verse one to end.

Speaking on the theme of the occasion, Bishop Cletus Bassey, the State chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said that faithfulness is all about steadfastness, fidelity and consistency. The Bishop said that God is faithful because of three things; His sovereignty, His Purpose, and His Covenant.

Drawing his texts from Isaiah 40:28 and Romans 9:16 the CAN chairman said that God decides all things by Himself adding that come 2015 the purpose of God will be achieved if the people will seek the will of God. On covenant, he said that God honors covenant and that when people honor covenant, unity is achieved. He called on the people of the State to seek unity of purpose in the forthcoming governorship elections in the State and to respect covenant so as to achieve the purpose of God for the State.

The Bishop also stated that when Ibibio Union was formed in 1928 there were no divisions or ethnic colorations of Ibibio, Annang, Oro, Ibeno, Eastern Obolo etc, but that all were Ibibios which made the Ibibio ethnic group to be the 4th largest ethnic group in Nigeria after Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo.

But, the State Governor in his speech on the occasion begged to differ from this submission. The Governor stated that even at that time there were still ethnic groups of Ibibio, Annang, Oro, Eastern Obolo, Ibeno etc, but that those people agreed to be united and be known as Ibibio knowing that there is power in numerical strength. He therefore wondered why people seemed to be happy with themselves when they drum up support for their selfish ambitions through ethnic sentiments.

The Governor stated categorically that the next Governor of the State will come from the Eket Senatorial District, adding that any pastor who prays, prophesies, or preaches anything to the contrary does not and will not have the support of God and therefore God will not answer such prayers or prophecies because God is a God of justice and that anything short of Eket Senatorial District producing the next Governor after his tenure will be tantamount to injustice.

The Governor therefore called on all justice – loving citizens of the State both at home and in the diaspora to support the zoning of the governorship position to Eket Senatorial District as election campaigns will soon gather momentum.
