Homosexuality and Nigerian campuses BY AKANIMO KINGSLEY

Africa, a continent with natural uniqueness has always been a subject of experiment by western powers in terms of politics and imperialism. Perhaps, Europe was able to successfully implant her culture on the continent, yet there are several African norms that will never fade away irrespective of external influence. This is evident in the massive support by Nigerians on the recently signed anti same sex marriage law. In my view, it is not enough to applaud the presidential gesture. The law has been passed but the future of Nigerian youths who engage in this act of pleasure is what we must not take for granted. It is on this note that I choose to tow our minds towards homosexuality in our campuses and how to curb it.

The debate on whether President Jonathan is right or wrong has rather become unnecessary as no one is ready to shift grounds on his personal conviction. For the record, I am not in support of any abuse on human right and at the same time not in support of an abuse of the freedom of choice granted by the creator himself, since some people tend to make choices that would naturally cause God to regret ever granting man the freedom of thought. However, we are not to judge or condemn anyone for we are mortals and full of sin. Humanitarianism aside, religion and culture of which the Nigerian constitution base is staked on, does not support homosexuality. Why then should we promote it?

In my thinking, the society should be worried more about the rapid spread of this unholy act in higher institutions in Nigeria. In fact, the rules and regulations of our universities, polytechnics and colleges should reflect the ban on gay and lesbian activities, with stiff punishment. Undeniably, there is no higher institution in Nigeria that is devoid of these “lost sheep.” The most interesting aspect is that some lecturers are also involved in this practice, thereby giving protection to students who are into it. Sadly enough, the negative health impact that follows it is quite disastrous with gays being more vulnerable. Perhaps, those lured into gay practice are not aware of the shortcoming that follows, but believe it or not, so may gays move around with diapers as a result of sexually driven infection. Psychologically, students who are into homosexuality stand a chance of losing their self-esteem and having a poor retentive memory.

The alarming rate of this new branded crime in our schools should not be overlooked. I challenge medical practitioners and students to launch campaigns in schools, educating students on the effects of homosexuality, before Nigeria records the outbreak of another sexual infection courtesy of gays and lesbians. I challenge the campus fellowship in our schools to take the mission to our gay and lesbian comrades who might have forgotten what the bible says about their derived pleasure. I challenge parents and school authorities to make a step to curb this menace in our schools. We do not anticipate a gay president in future; neither do we want a lesbian for a first lady. Our campuses must be rid of homosexuality for true morals to thrive. Say no to homosexuality and be saved.
