Some founding fathers of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo/Mkpat Enin Federal Constituency have adopted the immediate past Deputy Governor of the Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Nsima Ekere, as their preferred candidate for the 2015 gubernatorial race.
Accordingly, they have urged Mr. Ekere to throw his hat into the ring in the contest for the gubernatorial ticket of the PDP.
They took the decision on Saturday, January 4, 2014, during a New Year visit to them by a group of Mr. Ekere’s friends led by Engr. Joseph Effiong.
The party stalwarts unanimously adopted a spontaneous motion moved by Chief Ekong Mex Umoh, the pioneer Mkpat Enin PDP Chapter Chairman and Third Republic Member of the House of Representatives that Mr. Ekere should run for the gubernatorial seat.
Chief Umoh hinged his motion on Mr. Ekere’s sterling qualities and track record which, according to him, are needed to build on Governor Godswill Akpabio’s achievements and take the state to greater heights.
Others who spoke during the visit were Otuekong Atako Ukporo, a former PDP Assistant State Secretary, Mr. George Francis, former Eastern Obolo Chapter Chairman of the party and Mrs. Gina Umoh, former Vice-Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government.
In his reaction, Engr. Effiong, who was the Dean of the College of Local Government Coordinators of the Godswill/Nsima Campaign Organization in the 2011 election, thanked the PDP founding fathers for their decision and promised to convey it to Mr. Ekere.
He commended the people of the constituency for their unwavering support for Mr. Ekere over the years and urged them to sustain the support.
Engr. Effiong made it clear that their visit was not political but essentially to identify and rejoice with them in the spirit of the New Year.
Among those in attendance were Messrs Wilson Ekpro, Aniefiok Smart, Ime Williamson, Imo Essien, Aniefiok Brown, Mfon Nkanteen, Godwin Udofot, Solomon Harry and Inyang Ibanga.
Others were Dr. John Ekott, Ms. Juliet George, Barr. Uduak Ekanem, Chief Friday Ayara, Elder Udo Sam, Umoatan and Mrs. Abigail Okworo.
