The Akwa Ibom State government on Tuesday 10th September, 2013 inaugurated 26 boards of sports associations in order to develop and promote sporting activities in the state. The inaugurated boards are Taekwondo, Darts, Traditional Sports, Squash Rackets, Table Tennis, Wrestling, Baseball/Softball, Track and Field, Volleyball, Chess, Swimming, Cricket, Basketball, Special Sports, Badminton, Handball, Judo, Tennis, Weightlifting, Boxing, Golf, Kick Boxing, Cycling, Karate, Kung-fu and Shooting.
Inaugurating the boards at the state box, Uyo Township Stadium, the special adviser Bureau of Sports and Youths Development Mr. Samuel Frank congratulated the chairman and members of the various sports associations, adding that their wealth of experience will develop and promote sporting activities in all its ramifications.
He commended the superlative performances of the sports loving and youth friendly governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio whose genuine interest and magnanimity have transformed the face of sports in the state.
According to him “we are proud of his Excellency’s remarkable uncommon transformation exploits which have repositioned the state in the nation’s sporting map. Also, the ongoing construction of an Olympic size stadium in Uyo, when completed will open Akwa Ibom State up to the sporting world”, he said.
Mr. Frank who is the chairman, Akwa Ibom State Sports Council further noted that the Bureau of Sports and Youth Development and the state sports council are committed to Grassroots Sports Development with the cardinal objective of discovering and nurturing of young talents to showcase them for greater performance in national and international championships even as he urged them to work as a team to move the sports sector forward for more successes ahead.
In his speech, the director of sports, Bureau of Sports and Youths Development, Coach Aniedi Dickson said the inauguration of the boards was very timely, adding that scrabble board was not dissolved because they have been winning goals and medals for the state.
Responding on behalf of new board chairmen and members, DIG Udom Ekpoudom (Rtd.) who is the vice chairman, squash rackets thanked the SA and the entire sports council for finding them worthy to be appointed into the board and promised to develop sports from the present level to a higher level.
