Udom Emmanuel: A corporate administrator in cooperate governance

Udom Emmanuel: A corporate administrator in cooperate governance
History was again made in the life of governance in Akwa Ibom State sequel the inauguration of the present Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

Like the state governor who performed the inauguration declared, the experience the new Secretary to Government has gathered over the years having worked in the private sector, will bring the needed skill to his job as Secretary to the State Government.

When looking at the background of the new Scribe, one would be tempted to conclude that if given the enabling environment to exhibit his ingenuity and dexterity, Akwa Ibom state will soon stand out among her contemporaries like the Zenith Bank that is today standing as the biggest and strongest private financial institution, not just in Nigeria, but in Africa as a whole.

Sincerely speaking, his few months in government have been very rewarding, hence the many positive changes in the State.

As simple as he wants his name to be, Mr. Udom Emmanuel no doubt is a son of Onna and an Eket Senatorial District man in Akwa Ibom State.

He is a banker of no mean repute who has attained the peak of the banking profession as a member of the Board of Executive and non-Executive Directors of Zenith Bank, after serving as a manger of the bank in different countries. He is a man with an in-depth knowledge of financial management as evidenced in his numerous international and local awards.

Simply put it, the SSG is a humble, intelligent, resourceful and hardworking gentleman whose arsenal of connections in terms of business and investment wise is compared to non in the state.

The appointment of this resourceful gentleman as Secretary to the State Government is the best thing that has ever happened in the life of the present administration which has gone a long way to show that our state will be better than what it is today in the near future. Excellence is now encouraged and introduced into politics.

It appears like the days of giving or handing over governance to politicians will soon be over as we pray for a quick succession of governance from the hands of politicians to those who have been tested and found worthy especially in financial management like the SSG to man governance.

Today it is not by chance but by divine arrangement that Mr. Udom Emmanuel had to come down from his exalted office at the Zenith Bank to help build his fatherland.

As the world is moving towards entrusting the governance into the hands of those who have managed resources over time and proven themselves to be competent in that aspect, Akwa Ibom State cannot be an exception. It is important for the state to also key into the new order of things.

Because of the resourceful nature and in-depth knowledge of financial management of the indefatigable SSG, Akwa Ibom State today has been registered as one of the states in the globe to be IPSAS compliant which is the best and modern accounting system globally.  With this remarkable achievement, one can say that the state is gradually joining the global world in terms of innovation. The state governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio was very proud when he appeared before the state House of Assembly to present the 2014 budget proposal to the state Assembly and mentioned that the 2014   budget was prepared in line with the International Public Sector Accounting Standard (IPSAS).

Apart from managing the resources of the State, the SSG has the needed connections with investors globally, to drive the industrialization agenda of the State. He has said repeatedly and assured the people of the state that he is competent to attract investors to the state which will further promote the economy of the state and generate more employment opportunities.

At the recent seminar organized by the Bureau of Political and Legislative Affairs, the SSG said: “the action word should be a sustainable development. What will interest me to park like ten cars in my house while a lot of people in my community are trekking? So we need somebody that has the interest of the people at heart. Let’s try to remain focus. We need to change certain equations. I want to see this state in the next few years where our graduates will leave school and a petrochemical industry is somewhere for them to work. I want to see one or two industries somewhere.”

Mr. Udom Emmanuel does not just believe in service, but he believes that there should be humility in service because he understands that it takes humility to be a good leader.

Within his few months in office as SSG, he has transferred his vast knowledge of making money work for the people in to governance being a man who knows how to use money and invest in those things that will be more profitable within a short period of time.

He has replicated what is obtainable at the private corperate world into governance in his bid to build a strong and independent financial base of the state.

Apart from his vast knowledge in financial management which is the much needed tonic for good governance, he has been able to maintain what can be described as a strong and brilliant human relationship through effective communication.

He never allows the job of SSG get into his head. Apart from the busy nature of the office, he still creates time to answer calls and respond to text messages for effective public relations.
