Students charged on Political Culture

Students charged on Political Culture
Students and youths have been charged to participate positively in the electoral process by upholding pro-social values, patriotism and to shun actions inimical to democratic ideas. This call was made during the monthly Akwa Ibom Students Alliance Leadership Camp held recently in uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The event had in attendance students of tertiary institutions across the state, past/present student leaders, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students Matters- Comrade Ini Ememobong, Special Assistant to the Governor on Education- Comrade (Mrs) Christy Edwards-Akpan, and featured non-violent/ advocacy training and guest lecture by Dr. Aniekan Brown of the University of Uyo on the topic ‘Mobilization: A tool for socio political change’.

In his lecture, Dr. Brown brought to the fore, global socio-political practices and stressed on harnessing human and material resources to actualize a set goal, being social change. While delivering a presentation on strengthening electoral democracy through non-violent advocacy, Mrs. Christy Edwards-Akpan urged participants to uphold patriotic values in the discharge of their civic duties especially during elections. Comrade Ini Ememobong lectured on public speaking, leadership development, and laid emphasis on the ongoing voter registration and encouraged registered voters to go to their polling units and collect permanent voters’ cards while fresh voters should register in polling units of their choice but desist from multiple registration.

The Akwa Ibom Students Alliance is an ideology based mobilization group for the enthronement of sustainable development in governance championed by Mr. Udom Emmanuel. The leadership camp created awareness, and equipped participants with basic leadership skills to contribute to national development. Participants vowed to put knowledge garnered to practice in the forthcoming elections and support the yearning of Akwa Ibom people for power shift to Eket Senatorial district come 2015.
