Senator representing Eket Senatorial District at the red Chambers of the National Assembly, Mrs. Helen Esuene has advocated for a society prone to social Juistice, equity and peace as panacea for sustainable development. She stated this while delivering a speech during a youth summit held at Shehu Musa Yar'Adua centre in Abuja recently.
Senator Esuene who is a former minister of Environment and Housing noted that a sustainable development is measured in terms of the carrying capacity of the environment referring to land, air and water. She stressed that the atmospheric oxygen and carbon dioxide must be balanced being key factors in development. The Eket Senator speaking further stressed the need to have a society with an even distribution of wealth in practice as this will promote peaceful and harmonious coexistence of different persons.
The Chairman Senate committee on Youths and women development said a situation where the haves continue to have without efforts and the have nots are deprived of even the dividends of their efforts is capable of producing a society with discontentment and strife anytime and noted that only good governance can foster sustainable development which can be made possible through job creation, entrepreneurship and adequate health care delivery and social welfare.
Esuene furthermore advised government at all levels to target Education that is technologically based in order to address the present need of the world, stating that both government and the society should de-emphasize on the imports of white collar jobs, but encourage technical and skills acquisition in order to guarantee the youths a future they deserve. She also advised parents to lay basic tenets for quality future in their children culturing them to be hardworking, respectful especially to the female gender and to also imbibe the spirit of honesty and patriotism.
She spoke to parents to also ensure that they maintain a manageable size of family while calling on the youths to take their future with all amounts of seriousness taking advantage of available educational opportunities offered them and to also shun all kinds of anti society engagements.
