FRSC boss decries lack of tools

The Federal Road Safety Corps RS6.31 Eket Commandant, Engr. Ramalan M. Yerima has decried the non availability of Towing Trucks and other working tools in his command, describing the situation as very retrogressive.

The Commandant bared his mind while speaking with newsmen on Thursday in Eket during the hosting of 2014 Special Marshal Day with over 50 special marshals in attendance.

Yerima said “our activities here is hampered by lack of essential working tools which includes Towing trucks, patrol vehicles and communication equipments, about four units are made to use just a few patrol vehicles which is unacceptable”.

He said further that personnel of the command go extra miles to do their duty in the face of some Logistic challenges, adding that he has complained to the relevant authorities without any positive action.

Addressing the special marshals before commencement of field work, the unit commandant said motorist both  commercial and private drivers should be made to understand the importance of using seat belts within the city.

“The same drivers who drive within the city are those found on our highways, so if we instill on them the habit of using seatbelts within the town, it will reflect on our highways”, Yerima said, adding that change of behavior by motorist should be the watchword.

“We are currently embarking on Public enlightenment on the need for every motorist to embrace the use of seat belt. It is for their own good and that of the general public”, he emphasized.
He revealed that the unit has recorded a very low rate of accident within the first quarter of 2014, stressing that the level of public awareness has deepened as a result of public campaign carried out by the commission.

Mr. Ramalan said if towing trucks and enough patrol vehicles are made available to the unit, personnel will find it easy to put in their best for effective control of Road accidents in the state.

He however admitted that the State Government has taken care of the black spots on some parts of the state which hitherto has claimed many lives, adding that it is very unlawful for residents to build bumps on our roads without permission.
