Prof. Balama Obomanu: Celebrating a renowned academic, Rector @ 61

Professor Balama Joseph Obomanu, by every yardstick, is a man of immense character, wisdom and stature blessed by God. 

A staunch Christian of the Anglican Church and Knight of St. Christopher (KSC), Prof. Obomanu combines his position as Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Ukana with a sound spiritual background rooted firmly in his faith to God. 

His managerial acumen is second to none. Blessed with rare foresight and deep intellect, Prof. Obomanu is an astute manager of men and resources. As a go getter, he never looks back when in pursuit of any goal that bear positive imprints. To him, no obstacle is beyond remedy so long as the will is there to pull through the hiccups that crop up here and there.

Born into the famous Adonye family of Alabo Aberenyanagha War Canoe House many years ago, he is a proud father of two beautiful children with one adorable wife.

He hails from Queenstown in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State.


His love for education plus a mindset of excellence saw him make great strides in his academic pursuits. In 1987, he graduated from the Faculty of Technical and Science Education, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt as the Best Graduating Student in Science Education - Chemistry option.

Professor Obomanu holds post graduate degrees of Masters and Doctor of philosophy in Science Education with focus in Chemistry and Allied Subjects from the University of Port Harcourt.

As pioneer Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Ukana, he has always put the right foot forward in virtually all his endeavours that pertains to the institution. At the second matriculation ceremony held on August 3rd this year, he took out time to highlight some of his achievements within the time he has served as rector.  Hear him:

“So far, we have secured interim accreditation for Computer Science and Statistics. In line with our undying passion for academic expansion, in the coming weeks, we hope to put forward for final verification of earlier denied programmes such as Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology, Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) and some Business Management Programmes. Moreover, in preparation for the National Board for TechnicalEducation (NBTE) resource inspection, we have taken delivery of multi-million naira modern laboratory/workshop equipment covering Mechanical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Architecture, Quantity Surveying and Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technologyrespectively. It is our hope that these equipment will ensure that our students acquire practical skills needed in the 21st century Nigeria.”

Having single mindedly and with great vigour pursued the goal of building an enviable citadel of learning that will churn out employable and self-sufficient graduates with sound technological and entrepreneurial zeal and background, Prof. Obomanu , at the second matriculation ceremony, eulogised Senator Godswill Akpabio for building an Entrepreneurial Development Centre and a Sports Complex in the institution. He noted with relish that the centre will help drive the objectives of the Polytechnic which is anchored on producing graduates that will be able to compete favourably with their contemporaries anywhere.

Professor Balama Joseph Obomanu is a thoroughbred scholar of high standing whose passion for education inspires a great many. As a gloss to his strong personae and exceptional qualities, he is a recipient of several meritorious and distinguished awards.

 He is a winner of the Commissioner of Education prize as the Best Graduating Student in Science Education - Chemistry, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt; Oyo State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Certificate of Honour for meritorious service; Award of Excellence in Academics by Enitonia High School Old Boys’ Association - Port Harcourt Branch; Award of Honour as the Pioneer Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Ukana by Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt and several others.

As a man with several academic feathers celebrates his birthday today, we can only pray that His Maker may continue to endow him with wusdom, knowledge and grace to soldier on in the race of life.  It is a special occasion for a man that has proved to be a father and counsellor to many. 

We know that the years ahead holds greater promise for more remarkable strides in your life. You have demonstrated sheer compete and candour of a leader during your time as Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Ukana so much that the bug has caught up with anyone that comes in contact with you. Your kind is rare, Sir.

On this momentous occasion of your 61st birthday anniversary, may the heavens open for you and nay you drink from the fountain of life even as you match gracefully into a new chapter in your earthly sojourn.
