Gov. tasks youths to use formal education for economic dev.

GovernorUdom Emmanuel has called on graduates in the country to look beyond their fields of specialization in their quest to make ends meet, saying the dynamic nature of today’s society is dictated by ideas rather than certificates. 

Speaking at a Variety Night organised for the Batch ‘B’ National Youth Service Corps members at the State Orientation Camp, Ikot Itie Udung in Nsit Atai, the Governor urged youths to see education as a foundation for self actualisation, which should stimulate their thinking and propel them to break new grounds in coping with the challenges of the dynamic society.

LG boss advises widows against cursing children

Widows in the State have been asked to refrain from heaping curses on their children to enable them fulfil their destiny in life.

The Ika Transition Committee Chairman, Mr. Marcus Macdonald speaking last Tuesday, during a meeting by Women Advocacy and Support Centre (WASC) Uyo, rather urged widows to always pray for their children to be prosperous.
Saying he was an example of the message of Dakkada, Mr. Macdonald said as a son of a widow who did not give up hope, he encouraged himself with the help of his mother and studied hard to be what he is today.

The Ika Council boss said that Ika Transition Committee, through the Ika Community Enhancement Programme will soon give financial support to widows in Ika and train youths in relevant skills.

Info Commissioner extols professional broadcasters, media workers

The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah has acknowledged the contributions of professional broadcasters and media workers to the growth of society.

Mr. Umanah, who made the acknowledgment last Wednesday, when members of the Association of Professional Broadcasters, Akwa Ibom State branch paid him a courtesy visit at his ministry’s headquarters,  observed that broadcasters and the media have contributed meaningfully towards uplifting the society through enlightenment, education and entertainment programmes.

Charging the group to key into the governor Udom Emmanuel’s Dakkada philosophy of greatness, the Commissioner said “broadcasters have been doing a great job in keeping the country healthy in many ways.” 

SA charges retirees on State development

The Special Adviser, Bureau of Political and Legislative Affairs, Mr. Anietie Etuk has admonished retirees in the State to assist in nurturing younger workers in the service and to lend their wealth of experience to the development of the state. 

 Mr Etuk, who stated this when the Akwa Ibom Retirees Initiative paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Uyo, extolled the group for their unity, focus and dexterity even after retirement, noting that the present administration was passionate about the welfare of retirees and senior citizens of the state.

Federation cup: Akwa united are champions

Akwa United FC of Uyo has emerged this year’s champion of Federation Cup after beating Lobi Stars of Makurdi 2-1 to lift the Cup for the first time.

In a final match played at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, last Sunday, Nnamso Edo scored the first goal for Akwa United in the 37th minutes of the epic encounter, while Awakan Abdulafeez doubled the lead for the Uyo Club in the 69th minute., , , 

However, Lobi Stars of Makurdi that has won the cup once and played five times in the finals of the cup pulled out one goal through a free kick at the stoppage time.

For the girl-child, FEYREP embarks on road walk

Wife of the Governor and founder of Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Programme (FEYReP), Mrs.  Martha Udom Emmanuel and a cross section of Akwa Ibom people hit the streets of Uyo on a road walk to sensitize the girl-child on the need to uphold her dignity.

 During the colourful event, which had women and youths turn out enmass and geared in FEYReP’s attire, the Governor’s wife admonished young girls in the state to keep away from bad company and abstain from all forms of sexual vices which could endanger their future . According to her, “abstinence is the only sure way for girls to avoid being victims of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.”

Finance boss tasks public servants on removal of miscreants

Public servants in the state have been  tasked to see the on-going personnel audit as their own by collaborating with government in weeding out miscreants from government payroll.

The State Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Akan Okon, while addressing representatives of MDAs and LECs during a meeting at the Ministry of Finance headquarters, Uyo last Friday, said the essence of the meeting was to find out why some MDAs were yet to comply with the directive of submitting their new nominal roll according to specified format, with the view to forestalling delay in the payment of staff salary.

Save our lives - Ewet, Eniong Offot residents cry out

Residents of Ewet  and neighbouring villages in Uyo Local Government Area have sent a save-our-life message to the state government to rescue them from the gully erosion menace that is almost rendering them homeless.

Already, the erosion has destroyed about 10 residential buildings, business premises, farmlands and economic trees worth millions of naira. 

Mostly affected are: Cardinal Ekandem Seminary dormitory, Pagus Hotel, Eniong Offot, Keniss Hotel, Eniong Offot, Sermony Gospel Mission, Ewet and a poultry farm owned by a resident of the community while The Apostolic Church, Eniong Offot is at the verge of destruction.

Resign or key into Govt programmes and policies - Perm Sect

Principals-General and teachers in the State who have refused to key into government programmes and policies have been advised to resign rather than sabotage government efforts.

The Permanent Secretary, State Secondary Education Board, Elder Akpan Solomon Akpan, who was on an unscheduled visit to schools in the rural areas, expressed disappointment with some Principals-General and teachers over their indifference to government programmes and policies.

Elder Akpan regretted that most school heads have not imbibed the state government’s Dakkada creed, which is aimed at the moral transformation, spiritual rebirth and re-orientation of the citizenry.

A’Ibom to grow economy

The State government is ready to build a viable economy with a view to enhancing its revenue base, thereby complementing the monthly statutory Federal allocation. 

The Commissioner of Economic Development, Dr. Emmanuel Ating Onwioduokit while fielding questions on a live interview programme on AKBC, Unveiling the Mandate, observed that Akwa Ibom has the capacity to sustain itself once the requisite machineries and structures were put in place, adding that the policy thrust  and strategy of Governor Udom Emmanuel on industrialization, would put the state on a sound economic footing.

Ex-militants training should meet manpower need - Gov.Udom Emmanuel

Governor Udom Emmanuel wants a re-appraisal of the training programme for ex-militants in the Niger Delta Region under the Presidential Amnesty Programme to enable them meet the manpower needs of the Nigerian society.

The Governor, while interacting with the Co-ordinator of the Niger Delta Presidential Amnesty Programme who called on him at Government House, Uyo, said the re-appraisal will help to sustain the scheme and properly re-integrate the ex-militants to improve their economic status.

Mr. Emmanuel regretted the inability of the training programme to address the local content demands of the Nigerian society especially in the oil-bearing communities, noting that the trainees find it hard to fit into the available opportunities in the oil industry.

APC camp swells as former Council Chair, ors dump PDP

The People’s Democratic Party in the state on Monday suffered yet another setback as a former council chairman in Urueffong Oruko Chief Okon Tom Osung officially defected to the All Progressives Congress APC along with his former councilors and other party officers.

The former council boss was received alongside his colleagues by the state leadership of the APC at the party headquarters along Atiku Abubakar way. Receiving the defectors, the state chairman of the APC Mr Amadu Attai expressed his happiness that the people of Urueffong Oruko came out in their numbers to witness the official reception of one of their great sons into the APC fold while also describing Chief Osung as a big fish whose orientation was based on progressives and also a man with good leadership qualities who has a good number of followers. According to him, it was a monumental occasion and a blessing for the party which consolidates the fact that change has come to stay in the state and also reiterated that the former council chairman made a great decision by dumping the PDP for the APC.

The Okobo Transition Committee Chairman, Mr. Atta Okon Atta has warned staff in the council against poor attitude to work, calling for a change even as he inaugurated three committees.
 
Inaugurating the committees for Recovery of Government Property; Housing Estate and Security Village; and Committee on Staff Attitude to Work of the three committees last Thursday at the Council Hall, Okopedi, Mr. Atta condemned the attitude of civil servants and political office holders who after their transfer or tenure of office still keep back government property, particularly vehicles, saying that his administration will no longer take it lightly with those concerned.

The remains of Late Chief Fred Anaka of  Ikot Ikan, Atai Otoro in Abak Local Government Area will be laid to rest on Saturday, 28th November, 2015. 

The interment will be preceded by the funeral service to be conducted by Blessed Covenant Church of Jesus Christ, Atai Otoro, Abak by 10am. 

A statement by the deceased eldest son, Rev. Udeme Fred Anaka indicates that the late Chief Fred Anaka while alive was a committed farmer and a professional Caterer who served in many institutions in including being the Chief Cook at Church of Jesus Christ Comprehensive Secondary School Atai Otoro. The statement described the late Chief Fred Anaka as a community leader, a devout Christian, a philanthropist and a caring farther who taught his children how to grow in the ways of the Lord.

This was disclosed by the Chief Executive Officer of Omnispec Resources, Mike Anwana, during a public seminar organized by the company recently in Uyo.

Agric staff rate commissioner high

Staff of the ministry of Agriculture, Akwa Ibom State, have risen in solidarity and support of the present commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Mattew Ekaette, who assumed duties barely six (6) months ago.

In a statement issued at the end of their enlarge meeting over the weekend, the workers, comprising of the junior and senior, noted that, although, they were not trying to pass judgment or cast aspiration on previous leadership in the ministry, it was necessary to give kudos to their boss who in the past months, has done us proud by initiating Agricultural programmes which hitherto were not known.

Indications emerged  last night that some elders from the state who have been hopnobbing with the state APC governorship candidate Umana Umana, may have concluded plans to come back and be reintegrated in the current dispensation of Governor Udom Emmanuel. 

A source say that these out of favour elders, are not happy that their poor political calculation has landed them at the wrong side of the divide, where they only hear about governance but are unable to access the government of the day.

THE INK Newspaper exclusively gathered that the party chairman consulted former governor Godswill Akpabio during a function in Abuja, Penultimate Week, in presence of Udom Emmanuel about his ambition stating that he has the willpower and the potential to lead the state and that he is also capable of completing the tenure of Late Akpan Isemin which was botched by a military coup in 1993.  According to our source, the Etinan born politician told Senator Akpabio to look at him in the face if he doesn’t look competent and capable enough to complete the tenure of Obong Akpan Isemin.

The National President of the Union, Prof. Asindi Asindi made the remark on Monday during her national congress at Esit Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

Asindi said that only Eket segment of the east west road project that has been altered from double into a single lane.

The ruling of the Taraba State Election Petitions Tribunal, which invalidated the election of Darius Ishaku as governor in the April 11 election and handed the governorship to Aisha Alhassan, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, has merely confirmed what is public knowledge, namely, the grand plan by the APC to ensure the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is reduced to a vegetable state that would render it a weak opposition.

In a judgment that has continually being queried even by legal experts, the tribunal declared Ishaku’s election null and void, not because he did not win majority of votes cast; not because of irregularities during the election, but because he was not purportedly not properly nominated by his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

There is panic and anxiety in the political camp of embattled Senate Minority Leader and former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio as the Court of Appeal,  Abuja Division gets set to hear and determine the appeal filed by Chief Inibehe Okori of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against the judgement of the Akwa Ibom State National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja which upheld the disputed March 28, 2015 Akwa Ibom North West senatorial district election which saw Akpabio scoring 422,009 out of the alleged 444,505 votes cast in an election where only 205,519 voters were accredited. The tribunal had ruled among others that despite the clear case of over voting,  Akpabio’s election was done in substantial compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

He may suggest to you an age long friend you are re-uniting with after a while. Believe me, this is goodwill and an indication of quality education and exposure, quite an enviable persona of this egg head which is not a regular component of famous or successful people in this clime when one comes across them.

2,000 children to storm Uyo for AKBC children  carnival
No fewer than 2,000 children are expected to participate in the maiden elections of the AKBC children carnival on Saturday, December 26, 2015. 

This was revealed by the convener of the carnival, Mr. Sunday Umanah, while briefing newsmen recently in Uyo. 

Mr. Umanah, who is the chairman, National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), said the carnival will be the first of its kind.

Siasia and his wards have the arduous task of picking a ticket at the championship which is designed to select Africa’s representatives for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Nigeria missed the last edition in London in 2012 and will look to make up for that with qualification for the event which Nigeria won in 1996 when a Nwankwo Kanu-inspired side led the team to beat Brazil in the semifinals and then Argentina in the final.

Jose Mourinho believes Chelsea will take a major step towards turning around their troubled season if they can seal qualification for the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday.

Mourinho's side have travelled to Israel to face Maccabi Tel Aviv in their penultimate Group G fixture knowing a victory combined with a draw or defeat for Dynamo Kiev against Porto would guarantee their progress to the knockout stages.

The Promise Keepers defeated twice in one week to secure their first major trophy since the establishment of the club about two decades ago. 

Nigerian Government should place a ban on street begging

Street begging is the act of asking for alms and meagre assistance from passers-by along the road. It is practiced by men and women of all age-grade and spans across virtually every society. Begging itself is an age-long social problem in Nigeria and with each passing year, beggars get to improvise this trade with new trends and inventions.

Findings have shown that street begging is more common among those of the north and is not limited to young people alone. Adults also participate in this norm.
