A’Ibom First Lady calls on women group to tackle teenage pregnancy
The wife of Akwa Ibom Governor Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel has called for synergy between her pet project, Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Program (FEYReP) and Conference of University of Uyo Women Association in tackling the menace of teenage pregnancy as well as promoting moral values among youths in the state.
 
Mrs. Emmanuel stated this when she received the leader of the group, Prof Felicia Bassey who led other members on a courtesy visit to her at government house, Uyo. The governor’s wife said the synergy became important to help tackle the scourge of teenage pregnancy in rural communities which according to her has eaten deep into the society.
She added that as female university lecturers, they have a role to play in changing the ugly tide, and challenge the leadership and members of the group to come up with enlightenment programmes on campus that will help educate students especially the girls on the need to uphold their dignity and as well restore moral values in our youths and families at large. Mrs. Emmanuel promised to do all she can to make sure that the ugly trend is eradicated in Akwa Ibom state. 
 
Earlier In her remarks, leader of the group, Prof. Felicia Etim felicitated with the governor’s wife for inaugurating her pet project Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Programm (FEYReP) which she said have come to liberate Akwa Ibom youths. She noted that the vision of FEYReP is in line with their organization’s objective which is to sensitize women to realize and take their responsibilities in the society.
 
Prof. Etim said the association in the last three years has partnered with the state Ministry of Women Affairs to celebrate the annual International Women’s Day adding that through the platform they have been able to interact and impact on various women groups in the state. She however solicited the governor’s wife assistance toward the building project of Centre for Gender and Women Studies at the Main Campus of the University, saying the building when completed will have a basement for commercial business activities.
 
Highpoint of the visit was the conferment of a Patron and Mother of the Conference of the University of Uyo Women on the first lady Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel.
