More babies factory uncovered * Certificate forgery syndicate smashed BY GODWIN SAM

In their continued quest to fight crime and criminality in the state, the Akwa Ibom State police command has uncovered a baby factory in the state and has also smashed a certificate forgery syndicate.

The latest success was recorded when on march 12, 2014, a baby factory at no 19 Nepa line Ikot Ekpene was uncovered and 12 suspects arrested in connection to the crime. This was made known to the press in a press Briefing by the commissioner for police Akwa Ibom State, where the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mr Etim Dickson hinted newsmen.

According to the CP, the discovery followed a tip-off from a good Nigeria that one Ima THOMPSON Akpan (female) was operating a baby factory with another woman simply known as “mma nurse” who is still at large. Seven pregnant women, most of whom were teenagers, were arrested alongside some men and the owner of the home, Ima Thompson Akpan.


The Police Public Relations Officer Etim Dickson stated that two of the suspects, Ikwo Johnson Ofuo and Joy Michael John confessed that they were enticed into the business and that on delivering a male child is sold for N400, 000 while a female child goes for N350, 000. Those arrested include 25 years old Udeme Mfon  George from Uruk Uso village in Ikot Ekpene LGA, 18 years old joy Michael from Nung Oku village in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA, 20 years old Blessing Jona Udoka from Ikot Ebak in Essien Udim LGA 19 years old Ikwo Johson Ofuo from Amamong in Okobo LGA, Godslove Dominic Johnson from Ifa Atai in Uyo LGA (18years), 15 years old Uduak Effiong Okon from Ikot Oku Village in Etinan LGA, and 18 years old Ukeme Okon Etim from Afaha  Offot in Uyo LGA who delivered a baby boy at the police station the day of the arrest.

Others were ability Sunday Ubong, Joe Valentine Ime, and Margaret Akon Jonah while the Mma nurse is still at large and the police are still on her trail. 

Meanwhile, in a related development, two middle –aged men, Ubong Joseph Udoh (male) of no 2 Sanni Ogun Road, Ikot Ekpene and Thompson Essien Edet (male of no 9 Ebukabuka street Calabar in Cross River state are in the police net in connection with the discovery of a large quantity of University degrees, HND certificates, and NYSC exemption certificates in their possession with different names other than the suspects names. 

The two man syndicate is reported to specialise in forging certificates and other academic documents. Items recovered from them were; one degree certificate of Imo State University, five HND certificates of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Ikot Osurua, one NYSC exemption certificate, two official transcripts of academic record from ‘Akwa poly” and two transcripts from the Polytechnic Calabar. 
When interviewed by media men, the certificate racketeer, Ubong Joseph Udoh said that his father who died on 3rd October, 2013 used to work at the Akwa Ibom State polytechnic and that before he died, he brought all those documents to the house, but a close observation by this reporter revealed that the date on one of those documents was 21st October, 2013,.

Also displayed by the police were suspects who were alleged to have stolen a -4- year old boy one Jesse Benson of No 16 Ekarika street Idu, in Uruan LGA. The suspects were Imabong Okon Effiong, the principal suspect whom the mother of the boy left him in her care as she left for work. Other suspects are Uduak Okon Effiong, the younger sister to the principal suspect who conspired and took the boy to a traditional birth attendant, Christiana Etim Okon of destiny road, Idu in Uruan LGA for the purpose of selling the boy. 

According to the police report, the quick intervention of the police nibbed the intention of the suspects in the bud and the child was united with his mother after being recovered by the men of the Nigeria police.
