Apparently worried by the outbreak of the dreaded Ebola virus in the country, the Rector, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron Amb. Joshua Okpo recently summoned an emergency meeting of all staff of the Academy to educate them on how to take rapid preventive measures against the Ebola Virus disease that is gradually penetrating the nooks and crannies of the country. The meeting, according to the Rector, was for all the staff of the Academy to rub minds and articulate ideas on how to prevent the Ebola Virus Disease from entering the Academy.
The meeting with the entire staff was the fourth emergency meeting with different categories of staff of the Academy within two weeks.
It will be recalled that the Rector had earlier summoned emergency meetings with both the Management staff, and the Medical staff’ of the Academy in a bid to articulate ideas on how to prevent the disease from the Academy.
According to the Rector “My role is to give leadership and directions, and to ensure that all staff of the Academy receive adequate information and awareness on this deadly disease so that we will all work together to ensure that we prevent not only ourselves, but the entire community from this deadly disease.
“This awareness and what you learn about the prevention of this disease is not only for your benefit. It is intended to benefit both your immediate and extended families because you are expected to educate them too on the steps to take in order to be free from the disease.”
The Rector stated that Management will ensure that a quarantine centre is erected so that anybody who is screened and shows sign of very high fever will be quarantined for further tests.
“What is critical for us at this point is to take rapid preventive measures. I therefore appeal to all of you to subject yourselves to the screening at the screening centres that will be provided.”
He informed the staff that Management, during an earlier emergency meeting had approved that all necessary equipment needed by Medical staff of the Academy to ensure smooth and’ successful screening be provided.
He stated that resumption date for cadets which was earlier fixed for August 29, 2014 has been postponed till further notice. He also informed the staff that Management has approved the temporary suspension of all mandatory courses in the Academy as well as Certificate of Competency courses.
He regretted the inconveniences these decisions will cause those who were scheduled to start their mandatory courses training, and urged them to see this sacrifice as their contributions to national development.
The Rector thereafter invited the Medical Staff of the Academy to educate the staff about the Ebola Virus Disease. During the session, the Head of Department (HOD) of Health Services, Dr. Chima Obioma educated the staff on the history of the disease, and also highlighted measures that need to be taken to be safe from the disease.
