AK council of chiefs commend NGO on efforts to curb crime


The efforts aimed at assisting the Nigerian Police fight crime and ensure security of lives and property through effective and proactive policing got a boost last week following the presentation of Police Information Boxes to the Akwa Ibom State Council of Chiefs by the Grassroots Crime Reporting and Prevention Project, GROCREP.

The information boxes which  will be placed in some strategic places such as the paramount ruler’s palace, clan and village heads residence, police post, and stations in the communities, local government secretariats, community town hall, government hospitals, banks motor parks, markets and confectioneries, selected petrol stations, secured public schools, institutions of higher learning, churches and mosques among others, is aimed at providing the police with information about crime committed or about to be committed. Presenting the information boxes to the State Council of Chiefs at their Chambers, Major Maxwell Eje Alexander (Rtd) said many members of the public inadvertently fail to report to the police, crime committed or about to be committed for various reasons ranging from fear of reprisal attack or being arrested by the police as a primary suspect, thus the need for the information boxes of which the identity of any person that volunteer the information will not be at risk. 

Major Alexander stated that Police Public Information has gained international acceptance and global reputation in crime reporting and presentation. He said the boxes will provide active involvement of the community and as well as create a channel that will avail the members of the public the opportunity to freely provide useful information.
