It was an avenue for the exchange of words at the Sport Stakeholders meeting convened by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Sir Monday Uko, last Wednesday when the floor was made open for comments and reactions after the Commissioner’s address.
Following series of contributions from Stakeholders, it was gathered that the Assistant Team Manager of Akwa Starlet Football Club, Ebong Umoh Afia in his comment, accused his Chairman Mr. Ini Edoho of embezzling the funds released by the state government for the last football season and also called on him to make an account of how the money was spent. He said, “Please my Commissioner call him (Ini Edoho) to make an account of how he spent the money last season because it was a total fraud”
The accused Chairman of Akwa Starlet, Mr. Ini Edoho in his defense is stated to have said that the money was used to pay-back the loan he borrowed to run the club before the release of the funds. Though the amount in question was not mentioned, THE INK gathered that while the Governor approved 100 million for the team the Ministry gave it 75 million.
When our reporter spoke with the team manager of the club, Mr. Udobia Udobia on the development, he lamented that he has not collected any share of the money alongside his match allowances. He said, “my brother, it is true, the chairman has refused to call for a meeting since the end of last season to enable him make an account of how he spent the money and the worst part of it is that we have been dissolved, so we don’t know what to do”
The Chairman of the State team supporters Club, Mr. Emmanuel Effiong Akpan has however expressed disappointment at the management for wrecking such amount of money without giving the supporters their share of it after a long season of toiling and sharing in the club’s grief.
