Mkpat Enin Local Government Area has come under very serious political fire following the determination of Mkpat Enin Youths Assembly to take on the state Deputy Governor over what they described as the ineffectiveness of the first female Deputy Governor of the state.
MEYA made their position known in a communiqué they issued after their meeting penultimate week. Their decision to go public with their hit on the Deputy Governor had seriously unsettled the political class and created an atmosphere of suspicions amongst the political class of the area especially those occupying positions of authority for the area.
A competent source who is a member of the legislative council of Mkpat Enin had told our reporter that the Deputy Governor was unhappy with Ephraim Akpan the council Chairman of the area. It was suspected amongst the Deputy Governor’s camp that Ephraim Akpan was behind the news especially as two of his supervisors and a councilor were among those that signed the document.
Ephraim Akpan is said to have been told that he is not loyal to the state. The council boss was reminded that if he is loyal to the state Governor Godswill Akpabio, his boys (supervisors and the councilors) should not have signed a document against the Deputy Governor Valerie Ebe who is an important member of the state Executive Council.
To save his face and avoid the sledge hammer of the state, Ephraim Akpan is said to have denied sponsoring or knowing anything about the action of the councilors Hon Isaac Sunday Akpan, Hon. Michael Aaron and that of his supervisor for Education Uwem Imoh Ita and that of works Richard Akan. To back up his claims Akpan is said to have suspended the two supervisors for the action and appealed to the councilors to take action against the councilor who conspired to sign the said communiqué. A competent source from Mkpat Enin informed the newspaper that Ephraim Akpan was seen hitherto as a green snake and that he had to do the needful to ensure that he saves his political future and his position in the council.
Ephraim Akpan was not reached as at press time to comment on the reasons for his action. His known numbers were not reached, they were not available. Also the paramount ruler of Mkpat Enin is said to be unhappy with the development and has called for peace between the youths and the office of the Deputy Governor Lady Valerie Ebe.
Another group of Mkpat Enin youths have reacted furiously over the recent attack some other groups in the LGA descended on the Deputy Governor, Lady Valerie Ebe.
In a general meeting of the body, the youth president of Ikot Eka Ide, JamesUdo Enobong moved a motion for a vote of confidence to be passed on the Deputy Governor while the motion was seconded by Prince Uwem Cletus James. The group said, Our brothers must know that Her Honour, Noble Lady Valarie Ebe is not the Deputy Governor of Mkpat Enin L.G.A., but the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State and therefore, must do justice to all manner of persons within the enclave of Akwa Ibom State as provided by the oath of office she swore to uphold. This is a woman who was raised to this exalted position through hard work, perseverance, progressiveness, loyalty and sheer benevolence of the Governor. She has been Founder / President AKIWOL, State PDP Legal Adviser, Commissioner 1 , EARCOM, two-time Commissioner Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Culture and Tourism respectively. In all capacities she has done her best for Mkpat Enin and for Akwa Ibom State. We believe she will do even more, with our collective support.
Our young brothers, who live in Uyo, have suddenly forgotten that some of them too at one time or the other been given opportunity to serve “but blew it up” and some of them are still in government yet have not proven themselves.
Some of them have not been to their villages for years. They stay in Uyo and lay claim to representing Mkpat Enin youths, trying to intimidate government officials to squeeze cash out of their pockets. They are Uyo Maitama Joint champions, not representatives of Mkpat Enin Youth. Some of them openly sabotaged PDP and tried tactically to deliver their units to the opposition parties during the last general elections. Now they want to be rewarded! What kind of hypocrisy is this? In any case, is such malicious, clearly sponsored, advertorial a condolence message for a respected Amazon who just completed the burial of her dear mother, not long ago?”
The youths of Mkpat Enin however acknowledged that there is hunger in the land and stressed that “While we concede that there is poverty in Mkpat Enin particularly among the youths, we are of the opinion that such grievances should be legitimately and decently addressed rather than through “pull down syndrome” and blackmail of our respected leaders. We know their sponsors. We will like to advise politicians that they should rather assist Mkpat Enin youths to grow instead of sponsoring to knockheads against one another”.
