Akwa United desirous to get team anthem * Call for entries * Composer to grab #100,000

Akwa United Football Club of Uyo is eager of having an anthem for the team ahead of the new 2016/2017 Nigeria Football Professional League season.

In a release signed by the media officer of the club, Uwem Ekoh and made available to THE INK sports desk, the statement called on entries form Akwa Ibom people who can compose an anthem for the team to summit their composed anthem and a reward of N100, 000 awaits any luckiest person that his or her song would be approved by the team.

The release reads, “In line with international best practice, Akwa United F.C, the promise keepers and pride of Akwa Ibom is desirous of having a theme song that fans and supporters will be proud of.

Akwa Ibom SWAN to conduct election, first week of December

The Akwa Ibom State Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has been directed to constitute an electoral committee within one week to conduct elections into the State Executive Committee by first week of December 2016.

This was made known during the South-South zonal meeting of the sports writers association held in Uyo recently. The body also made numerous resolutions during the annual zonal meeting.

In a communiqué signed by the Communiqué Drafting Committee with Mr Alambo Datonye as Chairman, Mr Solomon Bassey, Secretary and Mr. Jude Agbeyeke as member, and made available to THE INK, the number one sports writing association in the country resolved to strengthen its membership through sustained capacity building and training of members.

TC chairman donates jerseys to secondary schools

In line with Udom Emmanuel’s administration vision of promoting grassroot sports development, the Transition Committee Chairman for Abak Local Government area, Dr. Emmanuel Udosen has donated new set of jerseys to 10 Secondary Schools in Abak Local government Area.

Dr. Udosen who presented the jerseys to the Games-Masters of the benefiting schools on Tuesday at the Council Secretariat, said the donation was in fulfillment of his promise to donate jerseys to Secondary Schools in Abak for use in the ongoing Ati Annang Secondary Schools football competition.

The Transition Committee Chairman re-stated his administration’s readiness to engage the youths positively through active participation in sporting activities especially football. He pointed out that apart from being a unifying factor, sports can take the youths off the streets and make them to become useful and responsible citizens in future.

Allegations has continued to rock Mr. Monday Uko’s tenure as Commissioner for Sports in Akwa Ibom State as football stakeholders have once again accused the former commissioner for allegedly diverting monies meant for the running of state owned football clubs for personal use.

The stakeholders while speaking with THE INK Newspaper said they were forced to speak out because of the continuous embarrassments Monday Uko’s tenure as Sports commissioner has continued to cause the state government and the entire people of Akwa Ibom State even after he left office.

Our sources who spoke with us on condition of anonymity described Monday Uko as a man who was tribal in his dealings and exceedingly corrupt. The sports enthusiasts said that Mr. Uko was so wild that no one in the state football circle knew how finances of the various were handled.

Emmanuel Udosen secondary schools football championship gets new date

The maiden edition of Dr. Emmanuel Udosen All Abak Secondary Schools Football Championship earlier scheduled to kick of today, has been postponed.

The postponement according to the organizers is to enable secondary schools in Abak Local Government Area to participate in the preliminaries of Ati Annang Secondary Schools Football Championship which begin today in the eight local government areas of Annang land.

According to the Tournament Coordinator, Mr. Isonguyo Iniodu, the Championship will now kick-off on the last week of November, 2016 after the preliminaries of Ati Annang Secondary Schools Championship.

1 Since he (Monty) became the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, he had banned Governor’s Cup in the State  which was a yearly ritual where indigenous players were discovered. 

2 He had shot-changed Athletes in the State, all monies belonging to athletes were not paid as approved.

More Foxes ruled out of Uyo cracker

Algeria have suffered a huge blow after a spate of withdrawals from their squad as the Fennec Foxes prepare to storm Nigeria for match day two of the 2018 Fifa World Cup.

The Super Eagles will this weekend at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium take on Algeria with the aim of consolidating top spot in Group B.

Nigeria defeated Zambia 2-1 away in Ndola while Algeria was held 1-1 at home by Cameroon which means they can’t afford to drop any more points at this point.

It seemed it was never going to end.  The controversies surrounding Nigerian football senior men’s team, the Super Eagles kept growing bigger and louder.  From the ever present squabbling in the NFF over leadership changes, to the poor and ordinary football exhibited by the Super Eagles, the negative press kept coming.  It was becoming more and more of a circus and Nigerians, who worshiped football as a second religion were already fed up.  The problems kept piling, especially after the 2014 FIFA World Cup Fiasco in Brazil.

The Zonal Sports Coordinator incharge  of Ukanafun/Oruk Anam/Ika Sport Zone, Coach Aniekan Umoh has described the camping and training of athletes selected during the final of the last Akwa Ibom State NNPC/Mobil All Secondary Schools Athletics Championship at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium as a welcome development and one of the best ways of encouraging grassroot sports development in the state.

Coach Umoh who spoke with sports journalists after watching the final of the training on Saturday noted that with the caliber of coaches and experts brought in by the Consultant of the project, Mr. Paul Bassey to handle the athletes, the sky will be their limit if they remain focused, committed and ready to take their career seriously.
