Akwa United on Sunday had to rally late to secure a point against a spirited Sunshine Stars of Akure at the Uyo township stadium and keeps them within touching distance of league leaders SharksFc.
It was the visiting team who drew first blood when Guindo Abilulahi pounced on a loose ball to give the Akure boys the lead in the 18th minute and therefore create silence in enemy territory. What followed thereafter was a barrage of attempts at the visitor penalty area from the home side. Ubong Ikpe was notably guilty of missing a sitter with the goal at his mercy and this meant Akwa United trailed into the half time break.
The second half resumed just like the first ended trying to find a way through the sunshine goal and they were rewarded with an equaliser from the ever dependable Nnamso Edo who curled in a 20 yard freekick in the 67th minute to ease the nerves around the stadium. The home side looked to be heading for a first home defeat when super eagles defender Solomon Kwambe scored again for the 18th place visitors but it wasnt meant to be as Akwa United grabbed the equalizer deep into stoppage time to rescue a point amidst mixed reactions from the home supporters.
The result leaves Akwa in third place after a point from their last two games. Sharks of Port Harcourt stay top followed by Warri Wolves while the fourth and fifth spot is occupied by Lobi Stars Fc and Nassarawa United Fc respectively.
