We have a Governor that Loves Education – Akon Eyakenyi
BY NSEOBONG DAVID
The Chairman Governing Council of the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, Dr. (Mrs.) Akon Eyakenyi has acknowledged Governor Udom Emmanuel as an education-loving Governor. She made this assertion when she led members of the Governing Council to the 2018 thanksgiving celebration of the institution held on Wednesday, 31st January, 2018 at the school’s sports ground.
Acknowledging the faithfulness of God on the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Ikot Osurua and other members of the institution, Mrs. Eyakenyi expressed optimism that He (God) would also see them through the year 2018.
She noted that the Solemn Assembly was significant because as a tradition in the school, the event afforded Christians the opportunity to gather together and thank God for the past and re-dedicate the school, staff and students to God for a successful year.
She observed that education is a top priority in Governor Udom’s five points agenda for the state because the Governor sees the younger generation as the future leaders of tomorrow.
According to her: “We have a governor that loves education. In his five-point agenda, education is number one. Why? Because he sees the younger generation coming up as the future leaders of tomorrow; and so, if the proper foundation is not laid, you cannot have good leaders tomorrow.” So from the Primary to Secondary, to Tertiary institution, he has shown great concern. The governor’s love for education has reflected on the prompt payment of teachers’ salaries, payment of examination fees, development of infrastructures in institutions which he has done to encourage education in the state”.
Mrs. Eyakenyi reeled out her achievements in less than two years since assumption of office in the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Ikot Osurua to include: a revamped medical centre with well equipped pharmacy which can provide medical services to people in and outside the campus, renovation of the school library to provide a convenient reading environment for the students, the first of its kind ICT centre and announced the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) approval for a purpose built library complex which she said construction is ongoing and assured its completion before the end of 2018.
The highly performed Governing Council Chairman extolled Governor Udom Emmanuel for making these feats possible through the approval for accreditation of courses in the institution, including the approval for employment of more staff for proper training of the students.
She appreciated the Management of the institution for their cooperation which she said also facilitated the accreditation of courses, as well as members of the Governing Council for their uprightness and for supporting her vision for the Polytechnic.
Mrs. Eyakenyi urged the students to discover their purpose of being in the school and work hard to acquire their certificates and become useful citizens of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria at large.
In a chat with newsmen while inspecting the ICT centre and the 1,500 capacity library complex by TETFUND, the Governing Council boss expressed satisfaction at the progress of the work at the site and the quality of materials used by the contractors, and expressed optimism that upon completion of the library complex, students of the institution will be exposed to a good reading and research facilities to enable them succeed with their work in school.
