The
State Government has reiterated its commitment towards the provision of sound
technical education to the citizenry to manpower demands of various sectors of
the society.
The
Commissioner for Education, Elder Aniekan Akpan who gave this assurance while
receiving the 2014/2015 report from the State Technical Schools Board said
Technical Colleges in the State are to be fully equipped with qualified
teachers and equipments to enable the institutions meet up their academic role
to the youths.
Elder
Akpan said Government has so far streamlined programmes and courses in
technical schools to be part with modern trends.
He
commended some patriotic organisations and individuals for supporting
government educational agenda mostly in ICT and other teaching aids to enable
the students to be adequately trained to meet the contemporary vocational and
technical education challenges in the society.
Elder
Akpan emphasized the importance of adequate records keeping and proper
appraisal of performance in government establishments as a panacea to improved
performance and commended the Permanent Secretary of the Board, Elder Akpan
Solomon Akpan and Management staff for the high level performance which he said
he has paved the way for greater efficiency within the Board and the School
system.
Speaking
while presenting the report to the commissioner, the Permanent Secretary, State
Technical Schools Board, Elder Akpan Solomon Akpan in company of the Management
Staff, disclosed that the report which is the first of its kind since the
establishment of the Board in 1990 is aimed at giving an insight into the
operations of the Board and the Technical Schools in the State.
Elder
Akpan said since coming on board as the Permanent Secretary, he has been able
to enforce the compliance of the school system to the NBT and NABTEB guidelines
as embarking on regular supervision of teaching and learning in our Colleges to
ensure uniformity and coverage of termly schemes of work and syllabus to
enhance quality performance of NABTEB examinations.
The
Permanent Secretary called for introduction of annual technical exhibitions to
enable students showcase and display ingenuity and creativity in the forms of
inventions and creative works in various areas of their chosen trades.
He
called for the government to establish more technical colleges in the State for
effective training of our youths to reduce the rate of hunger, crimes and other
related vices in the society.
Elder
Akpan who pledged the cooperation of the Board to the State Government
commended governor Udom Emmanuel for his effort to provide infrastructure in
our Technical Colleges as well as payment of NABTEB examination fees for the
2015/2016 candidates inspire of the dwindling financial fortunes of the Nation
as it affects the State.
In his
remarks, the director of programmes, Mr Okokon Okon expressed the hope that the
maiden annual report which is the brainchild of the Board’s Permanent Secretary
in conjunction with the Staff will work assiduously towards the repositioning
of technical education in the State.

SCHOOLS TO RESUME SEPTEMBER 19, 2016
Public
and Private Nursery, Primary and Post Primary schools in Akwa Ibom State are
now to resume classes for the 2016/2017 school year on Monday, September, 19,
2016.
The
commissioner for Education, Elder Aniekan Akpan who announced this during a
meeting with officials of the Nigeria Union of Teachers said that the new
resumption date covers all public and private schools in the state and
regretted all inconveniences caused by the one week shift in resumption date.
Elder
Akpan advised all public and private schools heads, parents and school children
to comply with the new re-opening date as defaulting schools will face
appropriate sanctions.
He
disclosed that academic work in schools will commence immediately on
resumption. The commissioner directed that all teachers in public primary
schools should be deployed to teach their subjects of specialization with
effect from the new session. He urged them to face their duties for the overall
success of the school system.
The
commissioner emphasized that the State Government’s Free and Compulsory
Education programme is on course for the benefit of Akwa Ibom Children and
assured teachers of improved welfare package for optimum productivity.
Elder
Akpan expressed his appreciation to Akwa Ibom State wing of NUT for the cordial
relationship that exists between the Union and Government, pleading that
adequate steps are being taken to address all issues raised by NUT as we
prepare for the new academic session.
