The Students Union Government, SUG, of the
Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU has impeached her President Mr Kufre Akpanikot
and also suspended the Vice President from office.
The legislative arm of the students Union Government
has consequently directed the Speaker Itorobong Jackson to assume duties as the
acting President of the Union pending
when the case against the vice president shall be decided.
In a notification of impeachment letter
served on Akpanikot, student legislators said the decision to impeach him follows
series of allegations against him to include running the affairs of the union
without an approved budget, using his
personal account as the union’s account, breach of his oath of office and that
of allegiance, sidelining financial offices of the union; amongst others. Reasons
given by students to suspend the vice president include negligence of duties
and making mockery of the office of the vice president.
The impeached President has accordingly
been directed to hand over all documents of the union in his possession to the
Dean of Students Affairs of the
institution. It could be recalled that subsequent upon the escape of a factional
NANS JCC chairman the SA to Governor Udom Emmanuel, Aquila Otobong Akpan had,
not wanting to be seen as a loser in NANS JCC affairs, appointed the impeached president to head the
NANS JCC ,again, not the dictates of the NANS solidarity constitution.
This
development had unsettled the student’s community in Akwa Ibom State who
however refused to recognize Aquila’s man.
And the impeachment of Kufre Akpanikot sources said have irked Aquila
who is said to be explaining all options towards reinstating her protégé.
Those close to Aquila said, the students SA
to Governor have vowed to fight back and her man reinstated.
When our reporter called Otobong Aquila to
get her position on this matter, she bluntly turned down the emissaries and
refused to reply to an SMS sent to her phone.
The Dean of students of the institution Dr.
Aniekan Akpan confirmed that the students had since alerted him on the
development and promised to look into it.
In a chat with THE INK reporter on phone
yesterday Dr. Akpan said, “It is yesterday (Sunday) that the students alerted
me on the development. And I have told them that we shall meet on Wednesday
(tomorrow) when work resumes.
