Piqued by the incessant cases of girl child abuse and prevalent vices among female children, a new socio-cultural women group in Oro Nation has commenced the mobilization of women to challenge the phenomenon head-on.

The International Women’s Day is held an nually on March 8 to celebrate women’s history and achievements throughout history and across nations. It is also known, as the United Nation’s (UN) Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace. The Day is aimed at helping nations worldwide eliminate discrimination against women while focusing on helping them gain full and equal participation in global development.

The International Women’s Day celebrates women’s deeds without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political, and reflects on these progresses to call for change where necessary. It is a day where acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities are applauded.

As is usually the custom, various women including political community and business leaders as well as entrepreneurs and television personalities are usually invited to speak on the importance of women in the society; their influence and issues that affects them. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments and more importantly, looking ahead to the untapped potentials and opportunities that await future generations of women.

The women of Uyo Federal constituency have reiterated their determination to support Governor Godswill Akpabio and his wife, Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio in recognition of their leadership qualities and selfless service to people of the state.

During a well attended meeting of the women at the Ibom Hall grounds on Thursday 20th February, 2014; the women which were drawn from the four Local Government Areas constituting the Uyo Federal Constituency; Nsit Atai, Uyo, Ibesikpo Asutan and Uruan described the Governor as a gender-friendly fellow who has not discriminated the women of the state. According to them, the empowerment packages of the governor have gone across the entire people of the state especially women, widows, less-privileged and the orphans.

Gov’s wife pay tributes to fallen heroines

To commemorate this years 1929 women war popularly known as the ‘’ Aba Women’s riot’’, the wife the Governor, Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio has called on women not to allow the values of the fallen Heroines to die but come together and  form a strong voice in order to change the country. She disclosed this during the 84th anniversary of the women’s war held recently in Ikot Abasi LGA.
