Recently, there has been a lot of noise  about the controversial issue of fashion, dress code and style on our campuses and Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic is not an exemption. It is controversial because there are so many varying views of dress code and fashion issues. However, before presenting the diverse views on fashion and style in our tertiary institutions, let’s look at the dress code itself.

 The dress code on campus is simply a law passed by the authority of some Tertiary Institutions in order to ensure that students dress properly and decently. The dress code which has been passed in many institutions, notably the University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology, Minna, University of Abuja among others, prohibits certain type of dressing considered to be indecent for the students on campus. It goes further to specify specific uniform dress for students in some professional courses such as law and accounting, amongst others.

When the news broke on the 6th day of February, last year, that four political Parties – the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the All Nigeria Peoples Party, (ANPP), the Congress for Progressive Change, (CPC) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) had finally signed the documents that signals their collective consent to come together to form a single political party that is now called the All Progressive Congress, APC, a lot of Nigerians were thrown into mixed feelings.

For some Nigerians, the merger had meant that a there is now in existence, a party that is strong enough to not only keep the government of the day under leash, as it were, but also has what it takes to slug it out with the ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in any election held in the country.

Unoma Akpabio charges Akwa Ibom girls on prayers

 

Nigerians have been advised to persevere in prayer for the safety of the Chibok girls and for divine guidance for President Goodluck Jonathan and the armed forces as they work to secure their release. The call was made by the wife of the Akwa Ibom State governor, Ekaette Unoma Akpabio at a solemn assembly organised by the state government to mark 100 days after the abduction of more than 250 girls from a school in Chibok, Borno State by Boko Haram insurgents. 

Addressing a group of girls who attended the prayer session from various schools across the state, the governor’s wife said: “Just thinking about them and their situation brings tears to our eyes. They are young people like you and I know as innocent children, God will hear your prayers and bring your friends back to their parents.

First Lady champions sensitization against child theft

The wife of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mrs Ekaete Unoma Akpabio, has appealed to parents and guardians to always accompany their children to school and church, as a way of creating a safe and secure environment for them.

Mrs Akpabio made the call on Sunday at the General Headquarters of Christ Faith Church, Utu Ikot Nkor, in Etim Ekpo local government area, as part of her senstization visit to churches in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun, to campaign for the protection of the rights of the child.
Describing children as the greatest assets of any nation, she said when a child is protected; the future of a nation is also protected.

According to her, children cannot be expected to take full responsibility of their safety, hence, those looking after them, must keep a close watch on children, and those that come in contact with them, as some pepertrators of child abuse could either be family members or friends.

Guber 2015: Ukanafun endorses Bassey Albert

 

 The governorship ambition of Obong Bassey Albert received a boost recently as the people of Ukanafun endorsed him as its sole gubernatorial aspirant for the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Obong Albert received the endorsement during a consultative visit to Ukanafun people which took place at the residence of the former Deputy Speaker and member representing Ukanafun in the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Okon Uwah at Ikot Antia Afaha Obo, Ukanafun Local Government Area.

Governor Akpabio bags multiple awards from AkwaCross Canada

For setting the pace in Uncommon Transformation in Nigeria, the State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio was over the weekend presented with triple Awards by Senator Don Meredith of Canada, at Ottawa Ontario, amidst pomp and ceremony.

Governor Akpabio who was honored alongside his wife,Unoma, bagged the Award of Excellent Transformation and Modernization of Akwa Ibom State, Pillars of Honor Award and Honorable Membership of AkwaCross Canada, while Mrs Akpabio was conferred with Companion of Honor Award for her supportive and complementary efforts in the uncommon transformation of the State.

Paul Ekpo: Akpabio’s Zombie? BY AKPANDEM

It is very disheartening to know that an Ibibio man in person of Paul Ekpo can discern so low, by allowing himself to be tossed hitter and thither. Instead of thanking God for being alive and behaving well, he seems to appear more irresponsible. The populace are disappointed, but not surprised at the brazen manner Akpabio’s led government is manipulating him. Paul Ekpo left the party in doubt of the insincerity which created an atmosphere of confusion. 

The truth is that for so long, corruption, indecision and maladministration pervaded the State PDP and a cancerous growth existed which ate into the very heart of the party thus, making the death of the party inevitable.

It’s no more knowledge the giant strides the global system for mobile (GSM) has made over the landscape of the world. 

When this technology rode its way into Nigeria, I remember how in awe we held it. it was for the upper class and upper middle class and you were considered a god (at least for us who were kids) to have a mobile. We played pranks though because we loved the attention and attraction that having a mobile device could give.

Those days, calculators made in the form of mobile were  vogue,(I guess the creators were trying to break the divide). A student who was lucky to have the back cover of his dad’s phone without his dad noticing would wear the covering on a mobile calculator and would bring it to school. What? All the students will look in awe. Those close to the student would come around to herald their friend only to discover that it was all a shade. However, because of the attraction, they’d pretend it was some real phone and then go about mimicking fake calls. If you schooled during this era, this is familiar story. Thank goodness, the phone is now child’s play that even kids now use them as toys.

Uyo Ward Six Stakeholders commend Akpabio, laud Enobong Uwah

The Uyo Ward six Elders have lauded Governor Akpabio for the successful hosting of the National chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu and for the ground breaking ceremony in respect of the permanent site of the State Headquarters of the party at Atan Offot. 

After an enlarged meeting of the ward elders, they expressed their appreciation for the historic event which also coincided with the inauguration of buses for the 31 Local chapters of the Party in the state on July 16, 2014.

In a communique issued after the meeting and endorsed by the Ward Chairman, Comrade Uwem Effiong Asuquo, alongside 18 other Elders, which was made available to our newsroom, they expressed appreciation to Alhaji Muazu for his official visit and lauded the uncommon Transformation of the State by Governor Akpabio, with particular reference to landmark projects dotting the landscape of ward six.

Restore our electricity to Us -Community cries out

Residents of Use Offot Community around the market to the precincts of the University of Uyo Permanent site have issued a save our souls cry to the State Government, Ministry of Rural Development and Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, to urgently restore electricity to the area.

Speaking to our correspondent, a resident in the area Mr Gideon Ekiko disclosed that, for nearly two months now, the okd transformer which serves hundreds of homes in the area blew up and packed up. 

Ever since, and with representations made to PHCN and the Ministry, nothing has been forthcoming as residents in the area suffer untold hardship and businesses suffer incalculable losses as a result of the neglect.

Underrated?

Have you felt less valuable because some people have the notion that you can’t get around a task even when you know within yourself that you can? It could be hurting finding yourself in this situation. If you’ve found yourself in this kind of situation, just know you are not a measure of what those persons think or say. You are best the way you rate yourself.

Having a huge sense of self-value is the inertia for the accomplishment of any great task. The believe has to begin with you. The good news is some of the greatest achievers were not highly rated. Most of them were considered worthless. For some who managed to make it through school, the class counted their position from behind. In spite of this, they never accepted the ratings of the people around them. They knew within themselves that they were far more valuable.

Uncommon democracy ladder BY SUPREME OKPON

Since the re-launching of democracy in Nigeria in May 29, 1999, year after year celebrations are held in different parts of the country to mark the democracy day. In some states so much is celebrated but very little is achieved in terms of infrastructural development and this makes it a sick democracy. 

It is mostly in Akwa Ibom state that democracy is alive and healthy because Governor Akpabio is concerned about inaugurating and commissioning live impacting projects which has gone a long way to service the people and sustained our democracy rather than mere celebration without lasting impact, proposed mainly for media hype.
