Beneficiaries celebrate Enoidem’s humanitarian accomplishments BY EKONG INYANG

“Not all rich people are givers, but most wealthy persons who give do so for political reasons and or to gain public attention, outside of genuine conviction, whereas few others, who give, do so because they have the special grace to give. No wealthy individual gives except he is gifted with the spirit of giving: for the art in itself is a gift from the Divine; and He bestows it on very special people.”-Anonymous.

There’s an African adage that says “take care of the root in order to heal the tree.” This wise saying in this context is timely and apt. It captures vividly the essence and importance of humanitarian drive by one of the state’s political icons and philanthropists par excellence, Barrister Emmanuel Moses Enoidem, who believes that for a people to grow and develop in all capacities, the root of the problem must be tackled; and whatever problems found must be genuinely, holistically and mercilessly resolved/solved without biases irrespective of where the subject hails from as far as such a person is of Akwa Ibom extraction.

This singular philosophical thought, driven by an innate desire to assist those nature has so graciously disfavoured and equally those so favoured but yet to realise their sound financial footing to have a leeway in life. Consequently, while he still served the state as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Treasurer, in 2006, founded and sponsored a foundation with very broad term of reference.

The Foundation known and addressed as the Enoidem Foundation with the motto: adding value to life, is indeed; a vintage service oriented vehicle aimed at bolstering individual, community and the state at large economically, socially and politically; especially as the seven point-agenda of the Foundation include but not limited to (a) galvanising the 31 councils of the of the state as one indivisible unit (b) empowering the Akwa Ibom Youths through effective and sustained education pursuit (c) workshops and seminars organising (c) offer of scholarships to indigent undergraduates in Nigerian or World’s Institutions and (d) giving or advancing financial as well as free medical assistance to women and the aged within and without the shores of the state, etcetera; according to the Foundation’s Head, Obonganwan Obonodo Uko.

So far, over 700 students have graduated from the foundation’s educational assistance, while about 400 hundred others are at various stages of assorted programmes at various institutions in Nigeria and in the Diaspora. According to Mrs Uko, the Foundation was even established in 2006, prior to Enoidem becoming the commissioner, “so you can see that he doesn’t do so because he wants to take credit as a public servant in assisting humanity, but to fulfil and satisfy a life-long dream- a longing to serve humanity irrespective of where one comes from.  As we speak, it is a well-known fact within reasonable circumference, that his benevolence knows no ethnic boundaries. He has created a model that should be emulated by others in such capacity. No news or broadcast had been made of his humanitarian works because the focus has never been on the positives in our clime, but that which centres on politically related issues and how to drag the good name of great minds like Barr Emmanuel Enoidem in the mud. But his spirit remains unbroken because he had from time been blessed by the Almighty to render service to humanity and this is exactly what he is doing.” The National President of Enoidem’s Foundation with branches in Uyo and Ikot Abasi local government areas says.

Apart from the foundation’s sustained educational pursuit, which has seen more than a thousand beneficiaries in eight years, with seven hundred JAMB forms already purchased this academic season so far for university aspirants from within and outside the state, the foundation’s focus is to see how the youths in the state could become self- reliant and financially independent so that incidences of theft and other related violent crimes associated with poverty can drastically be reduced in the society.

To avoid financial abuse which was observed prior to the setting up of the foundation by people who were entrusted with the running of the affairs at the initial stages “and to avoid further abuses, a body to coordinate and harness every vision by the benefactor was considered. This consideration led to the founding of Enoidem Foundation in 2006. It’s this foundation that oversees and sponsors by way of administering every humanitarian activity which has culminated into this great success we have attained today, owing to the great spirit behind the vision.” Obonodo stresses

The National President said the organisation doesn’t deal only with students issues, every year, she says, Enoidem distributes cars to people across the length and breadth of the entire state saying “last year, an Oron man was among the over 15 beneficiaries.” She stressed.  No, he doesn’t want to know whether you are from Annang or anywhere but his benevolence cuts across all boundaries and dialectical blocs,” she said in an answer to a question raised by this reporter.

“Every year people are given cars, bags of rice, wrappers and general entertainment. He doesn’t want to know where a beneficiary hails from but his interest is in getting lives touched. Last year, some people came into Etim Ekpo Local Government Area from Port Harcourt and Ibadan, and they were treated of their ailments free of charge. They were equally kept and fed free until they were well enough to return to their respective homes. That’s Enoidem’s spirit.” She says.

In the same vein, beneficiaries of Barr Enoidem’s benevolence have come out enmasse to appraise their benefactor, Barr Emmanuel Enoidem and have given him a distinction mark in what they strongly believe is the Rural Duties Commissioner’s selling point, agreeing that all it requires to benefit from his longsuffering magnanimity is a one on one meeting with this large heart giver.

From Uyo to Eket and across the length and breadth of Ikot Ekpene senatorial districts, his philanthropy resonates, beneficiaries agog with pride demonstrate love and commitment to his cause, volunteered information, and let this reporter into how most of them were and are still being touched by the man with uncommon milk of human kindness; who is described by his admirers and beneficiaries respectively, as willing to give his last in order to make someone smile. Some say they haven’t gained financially but that what they have gained from him exceeds what can be valued in monetary terms.

For instance, Mr Iboro Silas Ntiabong- a native of Ntak Inyang, Eka Uruk Eshiet in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, says of Enoidem’s magnanimity. “I have not benefitted from him financially, but what he did for me marvelled me and will forever remain evergreen in my memory. I was searching for a job and somebody took me to him. As we alighted from the vehicle that took us to the place and we walked up to him, after exchange of pleasantries, I told him of my mission but instead of asking where I came from or even asking me to come back the following day, as is the custom of some people; he just grabbed my hand, took me to his car and asked me to entre. To my shock, we drove straight to Julius Berger site and just he handed me over to the Whiteman and I was instantly engaged. Though Iam no more working there, but he had left an indelible mark in me and I’m eternally grateful for that singular act,” Silas who is full of gratitude to Barr Enoidem said adding that one did not need to come from the giver’s domain to benefit from his benevolence. 

This line of reasoning seems to have gained prominence in the minds of respondents, as everyone agreed that he gives without hesitancy or even wanting to know where you come from. “But what he doesn’t want is see ‘baggers’ with no tangible grounds for assistance clustering around him but people with genuine grounds for assistance, I’m sure, are always welcome; that is, if you can see him as he is a very busy person.” Says Ntiabong

Collaborating Ntiabong’s line of reasoning, one of the beneficiaries-an amputee, who was in need of a wheelchair two years ago, he told this reporter in confidence that prior to meeting Enoidem and having his problem solved, he had been soliciting help from every available individual- known and unknown, yet he was usually told to come back, but on meeting with Barr Enoidem; his story has changed.

The thirty-three years old amputee from Nsit Ubium LGA says “when I got to see him and after I related my story to him, he asked me to write a request and I did to the tune of N350, 000 and had it sent to him. To my greatest surprise, the request didn’t tarry three days as he gave the approval for the release of the money,” adding that he actually got the approved amount three weeks later and purchased his wheelchair.  

For that reason, the grateful soul sends his regards to his benefactor saying “thank you for giving me an opportunity and a platform as strong as Insight newspaper to say thank you Sir for not pushing me away or ignoring me as others previously did. Thank you so very much, Barr Enoidem,” the thankful creature avers.

Though now deceased, Mr Samuel Udo, another Ntak Inyang, Etim Ekpo son, a physically challenged was being sponsored through the University of Uyo by Enoidem but death struck few months after graduating from the institution.
According to Mr Iboro Ntiabong, the deceased met his untimely death in the hand of a woman who was indebted to him in the same village. From gleaned information, the perpetrator is cooling her feet at Ikot Akpan Abia police headquarters. Nonetheless, Enoidem’s humanity is fast becoming a noticeable feat amongst his foes and friends alike.

Due to Enoidem’s kind heartedness, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Akwa Ibom Council, Elder Patrick Albert, calls him a friend of the Media- a term only bestows on media friendly individuals. This implies that such a man or individual doesn’t close their doors against the press whenever their attention is needed. In this wise, many journalists in the state have directly and indirectly benefitted from Enoidem’s humanity.

According to findings, most beneficiaries do agree that Enoidem’s kindness does not stop with people from his domain-Annang dialectical bloc, but that it extends to every nook and cranny of the state because according to them, one of the focuses of his foundation’s term of references is to galvanise the entire 31 council areas of Akwa Ibom State into one indivisible unit whereby skills, transfer of expertise and  knowledge as well as massive educational drive that will enhance quality and set the people free from clutches of enslavement would be holistically pursued and attained. This, they agree that their benefactor believes will reduce incidences of violent crimes amongst our teeming youth population.  

Giving vent to this assertion, an Oruk Anam born Nnamso Donatus Idiong has this to say of Hon Emmanuel Enoidem’s humanity. “Barr Enoidem is a channel sent by God to most people including me, and I remain grateful to him for his wealth of experience which I have learnt from and his willingness to always help.
“If we have more of such people in positions who are willing to empower and encourage others to grow, I think we would be better politically and economically,” the erudite scholar in an SMS wrote.

Similarly, Mr Nsima Ekong, a beneficiary from Ukanafun has this to say of Enoidem’s philanthropy. “He is a good man, that’s all I have to say of him. But if being good translates to him giving me money: yes, he has given money to me. Aside the monetary issue, he’s a man with a good heart.” Mr Ekong says.

In life, no man has ever gotten it all right with everyone they deal with on a daily basis talk-less of a politician in a position of authority. This is because there are no virgins in maternity wards, anywhere globally. To the petty minded, Enoidem is the devil incarnate whereas to others, he’s the deity that must be venerated and those in this category are willing to do everything to protect their object that brings life back to the dead trees, in fulfilment of the earlier quoted verse   ”take care of the root in order to heal a tree.” Beneficiaries of Enoidem’s magnanimity do not see the politician in him but they consider his kindness and humility toward their plights and aver that he is their hero, inspite of his political crosses if really there are any.

Hear what Mr Mike Udofia, a Vice Principal is saying about him. “Enoidem’s philanthropy is not in doubt at all. It is only pathological enemies that will say that Enoidem is a bad man: Iam a direct beneficiary of his benevolence. He has touched me greatly though I’m not and indigent person. He doesn’t only help indigent people but anyone who he feels has concrete need for such help.

“He gives to churches and secular organisations because he believes that when you water others you yourself will be watered. I know of congregations outside his congregation that have benefitted from his humanity. Don’t forget that he is of the Power city but he finds it expedient to give to other churches.

“I had a need and went to him and after I told him of my problem, he said to me: is that all? And I answered him in the affirmative. Two days after that he sent me exactly the quantity and quality of that which I asked for. He gives not because he wants something in return from those he has helped. What will they be able to give to him in return?” He queries.

Continuing, Udofia says, “Iam not a politician so I don’t think he gives to politicians or to people of his Annang stock only. But his giving is inherent and he only expresses it because God faithfully bestows such love in his heart.” The Vice Principal said adding that Enoidem is a brand that should be emulated by all.  
Another recipient who says the humanitarian foray of Enoidem is real concludes that he is a direct beneficiary and recipient of the Commissioner’s philanthropic gesture. Pastor Udim Inyang from Ika LGA is full of praises to God Almighty for giving somebody like Enoidem the grace to affect lives not only of those from his political or dialectical bloc, but to people from all walks of life.

Hear Pastor Udim, “It’s real because I’m a direct beneficiary of his humanitarian ministries that God has given to him. He does it to his detriment yet does not care if it hurts or not. Iam a direct beneficiary of that benevolence. He doesn’t need to know where you come from. His philanthropy cuts across all ethnic and dialectical blocs. It is not an Annang thing but something that reaches out to the entire state. Let me say it again, I’ve benefitted from all angles of his humanitarian ministries.” He says and adds “I wouldn’t want to be specific about the areas I’ve has benefitted but it cuts across both cash and kind.”

In like manner, the Methodist Archbishop of Uyo, Most Rev. Emmanuel Udofia says of Barr Emmanuel Enoidem’s humanitarian drive, “he has affected the lives of people in this state, across board. He does not discriminate between the Orthodox Ministers and the Pentecostal Preachers or the Catholics etc. That is what makes somebody great! Once you get the attention of Barrister Enoidem and tell him your problem, he will smile and leave, and the next day you’ll see him solve your problems. That is how God called him: if he wasn’t brought to the position of authority, if he wasn’t brought to limelight or to government as well as to the position of empowerment, that his talent or ministry will still be in the cooler. Is he the only commissioner?  We’ve had commissioners, we’ve had so many of them in the past,

so many who had amassed wealth and afterward will travel to Lagos or Dubai and the rest.
“But he has been able to utilise the little within his portfolio to influence lives and his community. So he is one man…I remember two years ago, I preached a sermon in the state House and he just held me and said: Bishop, that was fantastic sermon, what do you need? And I told him please, I’m packing to my house and he said I’ll send a generator to you and in two days, a generator was delivered to my doorstep. As we speak now, I can tell you that I don’t know Enoidem’s house, his parents, his wife or children. I only pray for him as I pray for others. If he does that to me why wouldn’t God touch his heart to do even more for his community? And I want to believe that there’s no indigent person that will have need and go to Enoidem and will return not refreshed. Because I know he has got human sympathy and a good heart and I thank God for his life and that of His Excellency; because that’s how His Excellency is: he throws his hands and blesses people.

“That’s how government supposes to be. Everybody is not bound to be the same,  everybody cannot be in government, everybody cannot be a commissioner, but once you are there, try as much as possible to make sure that your community, your brothers and sisters, the less privileged, the church you’re worshipping in and community benefits from your benevolence. Last time, I eulogized him and the governor because you see some commissioners that will go to the Governor and tell him let’s go to my church and as they go to that church, the concept changes.

“He [Enoidem] has done it. How many times? He believes in his Pastors, he believes in his people and I don’t think that his Pastors have any lacks. That is how to know people who are committed both to God and to their families and to the church which they belong. That they don’t just come to thank God after their time in government has expired, what stopped you from thanking God while you were still active in service? What did you do for people?” the staunch man of God said of Enoidem.

On whether Enoidem has been of any assistance to his church, the bulky preacher has this to say. “We have had series of launchings and he has supported us that much. Even at the Christian Council of Nigeria’s, CCN, Conference, we had need and we went to him and he gave the highest amount and even on top of that he gave us pocket money- the envelop was for the National Body but the transport money was for us at the state level. That is because the state exco went to brief him on-behalf of the National Exco. He has been of tremendous assistance to our church.” The religious scholar says.

Alluding to the personage’s benevolence, a very close friend and direct index beneficiary, programmes coordinator, yet one of Enoidem’s appointees, Mr Godson Uwah, extols the good virtue of his master, averring that his boss’s humanitarian drive is legendary though unfortunately that it has not been reported because he does not want anyone to know about them.

Nevertheless, Godson acknowledges the sterling leadership qualities embedded in his boss and says “Enoidem as a person was born a giver and when his engagements prevent him from actualising life’s objectives, he can become ill.”  ”For instance,” he says, “if one makes a request to him and he cannot immediately meet it, then; he becomes restless because he wants to assist that individual in need. This desire to love and make everyone smile is a trait hardly found in many people.

For this reason, the Enoidem Foundation came into effect to redeem many: not only indigent people but as many that can be assisted by him directly or via the foundation.

Hear him “Enoidem has provided scholarships to over 1000 students in tertiary institutions across the nation and in the Diaspora, the building of 150 bed space hospital at Etim Ekpo LGA to take care of medical needs of the less privileged irrespective of tribe, creed and tongue of the beneficiary is still on going. As we speak, about three hundred and fifty or more people are presently on his scholarship list.”

Others he says are the “building of halls for skill acquisition and small and medium businesses and centre for extra mural studies as well as the purchase of 700 hundred JAMB forms for would be students this academic session.”

Godson avers that Enoidem runs and operates an open door policy that enables every Etim Ekpo and even non- Etim Ekpo people as well as those from the former Abak Division, to have free and unhindered access to him even in his country home at Ikot Eboro, Etim Ekpo LGA; even as he says that over 20 sewing machines are lying untouched waiting for those women and girls who would come to learn skills in the tailoring business to grab them.

In her conclusion, the National President, Obonganwan Obonodo Uko collaborating Godson Uwah’s assertion on Enoidem’s Humanitarian drive says “the foundation had last year bought wrappers, motor cars for people outside Annang land and every year we host people and give meaning to their existence. That’s what the Enoidem’s Foundation and its Sponsor represent. Barr Emmanuel Moses Enoidem is God sent to humanity.” She said.

  * Udom will succeed Akpabio  - Pastor Uwanta

The International President of Akwa Ibom Consolidation Alliance (ACA), Pastor Andrew Uwanta was at his best recently when he spoke with JOSEPH OKON of THE INK NEWSPAPER on topical issues about Akwa Ibom state from its creation to this present time, leadership in the state both past and present, industrialization drive, ACA, the 2015 Governorship election, Sir Emem Akpabio and Udom Emmanuel. Excerpts.

Tell us in a nutshell who Andrew Uwanta is I’m Pastor Andrew Unwanta, I come from Nkana in Etinan Local Government Area. I was born and brought up there. I attended St Mary’s Primary School Nkana, and later proceeded to finish at Ife, in Mkpat Enin Local government. I attended secondary school at Secondary Technical College, Ikot Akata. I started in 1972 and finished in 1976. I later went to work at Calabar in a Consulting firm called ACRES consulting services. 

I was employed there as a structural graft man trainee. I was there and took entrance examination and got admitted into the Polytechnic of Calabar to study Civil Engineering, when I graduated I went back to work in the same Company. In 1997, I developed interest in politics, though at the polytechnic, I participated in a lot of student’s politics, I was not in the leadership but I was a kingmaker. 

I never contested for any position. I started active politics in 1997 as a Youth Activist. I was the President of AkwaIbom State Youth Association which metamorphosed into Youth Council of Nigeria today. I was the Leader in my Ward, and I later moved and contest Chapter position even when Nsit Ubium and Nsit Ibom were in Etinan at that time, I won as the Chapter President of Akwa Ibom State Youth Association. As if that was not enough, I decided to proceed to the State level and contested the position of (PRO) which I won as the State PRO of the organization. That time was a military era; they were putting structures on ground to transit to Civilian rule. That was when we had MAMSA which supervised all the elections, and made sure that all the viable youths were put in groups to be able to take over from the previous Elders which some of them were band from participating in politics.

That is where I had all the orientations for political leadership. From then on, I developed active interest in politics, and I have been a former Chapter Chairman of many defunct political groups. I have been a Vice Chairman of Etinan Local government Council during the NRC days; I served from 1991 to 1993. I have also been the pioneer state Officer of PDP when it came to AkwaIbom, I have been the state Chairman of Nigerian Association of Small Scale Industrialists, and now I’m the president to Nigerian Association of Small Scale Industrialists NASSI. I’m also serving in the Law Reform Commission as a Commissioner presently; I have been a founding member and International Coordinator of ImanIbom Support for Good Governance. Presently, I’m the International President of AkwaIbom Consolidation Alliance, ACA in AkwaIbom State. I cannot mention all the positions of responsibilities people have entrusted in my care, but I have made a sketch of it. At a very tender age, I was compelled to be the Chairman of my Village Council which I served for 3 years. That was when we had relative peace in the entire area because I was able to run the affairs of the entire community by making sure there was adequate security.

As a Pastor, how do you combinewith politics?
Well, being a pastor does not disturb anybody from participating in any other activity. I was ordained as a Pastor in the year 2000, and it never disturbed me from my active politics, but all I know is because of my background, I take politics as something you must do to be able to serve your people, your community, and the state. If somebody lied when politicking, I don’t take that to be politics, it is against the wish of God.You don’t need to lie, you have to say the truth, when something is white you say it is white. I have also been taking part in my church activities as much as possible, rendering my service in the church. Besides, when you are in a venture that can also help you live well, equally you can contribute meaningfully in the Church, and assist other church members. So there is no crime in one venturing into politics. A lot of men of God are actively involved in politics; every human is a political animal, if you don’t ask people to vote for others, you should be able to vote yourself because it is your civic responsibility to be able to elect a credible person that has the fear of God.

How will you assess Akwa Ibom State in terms of Development and leadership spanning from when it was created to this present time?
I was at Calabar in 1987 when AkwaIbom State was created. I saw the extent of jubilation that the mainland people where doing, and they came back to their dear State and started working very hard to make sure it meets-up with other states in the Federation. In terms of infrastructural development, Governor Nkanga tried hard to bring in the state Secretariat and few other infrastructures. During the creation of the state, I could remember what brought me to AkwaIbom; my consulting firm I worked with was the Engineering Consultant for Uyo Local Government Secretariat Project which was later taken over by the state government since they did not have enough accommodation.That brought me to Uyo the same year the state was created, about November, and the secretariat building which was on going was then taken over and completed, that is the governor’s office Annex today. 

I can say that period witnessed the dualization of Oron Road; I also saw some pipe laying’s for pipe-borne water, and a few offices were renovated for use but not much could happen that time until Governor Nkanga came in. He did so well for the state as at that time, and ObongAttah came in and tried his best through his consultancy before he became the governor. The state was planned; maybe the implementation was needed in order for it to come-up. I will not forget Isemin who came with the concept of making sure that water is available in every rural community. AKRUWATSIN was created, a lot of water equipments were brought in which some of them remained there and rotted because Isemin was no more in Office, he was sacked by the army. When it came to the days of Governor Akpabio, we have seen a very wonderful work. I believe is God that is doing but using Akpabio to do what he is doing. The transformation we see in Akwa Ibom is very uncommon. 

Let’s face facts; he has done so well in terms of changing the face of AkwaIbom. And developments are dotted everywhere on the face of AkwaIbom. We commend him, we thank him, we ask God to continue to keep him for us.So far he had and is still having good mind on how AkwaIbom should develop, and how AkwaIbom should be industrialized and reached the height that no other state could reach.

 We are very happy thathe is using our resources very wisely, and what he uses it for is physically seen by every eye. He has changed our school systems, infrastructures were completely dilapidated, our children were suffering in leaking classrooms and some collapsed ones. He has done so much by declaring a free and compulsory education for our children up to secondary level. He has tried so much to make sure that medical treatments for our children and elderly are free; he has done the urbanization in the state. There is no way a visitor will come into AkwaIbom state without being confused with development, even the people from rural area when they come to the city they will be confused with development. I think he has done the best. Are you going to mention the International Airport, the Tropicana, the Five-Star, and all other projects like the brand new Governor’s office and Deputy Governor’s office? He has done a lot of infrastructural development not only in Uyo but across the entire state. IkotEkpene has been changed to a modern city; a Four-star Hotel is going on at IkotEkpene which we believe will soon be commission. We have seen so much and we thank God for keeping us alive to witness all these things, AkwaIbom State is a place where other states are coming to look at for development, study it and see the possibility of duplicating it in their states which is not easy for them to do such duplication because it is entirely done by somebody that is being send by God to be able to achieve that level of development. We thank God for him.

As the President of National Association of Small Scale Industrialists NASSI, what is your Association doing to key into the industrialization Vision of the present Administration?
NASSI has been in constant touch with the ministry of commerce and industry, and AKIICOP that is in charge of industrialization. We have received a lot of trainings from AKIICOP; today a NASSI man is able to come up with a bankable business plan that can help him or her attract funds from any financial institution. I think those are the basic things that an industrialist should really know; not hiring somebody to put things on paper which you do not even understand exactly how it is being done. The first or second question that is thrown by a financial institution to you, you fail because what you have on papers was not your idea. The basic things have been done; infrastructure is one of the basic things needed for industrialization to take place. Akpabio could not have done further than creating those basic things. The Federal Government is also working to make sure that power stabilises because any production using generator is not profitable because of the cost effect. We also look at the situation that it was not possible for an industrialist to access money at the interest rate they will be able to use and then pay back. All loans stayed at a double digit interest rate, but I believe with the state of economy today, government is trying to make funds at single digit interest for industrialization, and the Federal Government is also doing the same thing. Government has no business in investing directly on industrialization in terms of building industries, any industry built by government cannot be sustainable, people will manage it as a no man business and the entire thing will collapse. But if it is the effort of an individual to put it up, it will be properly managed, and we advised government not to go into direct industrialization but rather to create the enabling environment for the industrialization to thrive. I think it has started, and is still working on it.

No one government can do everything. You will touch this area and another one may not be possible for you to tidy up. Whoever will succeed Governor Akpabio will still push on with the industrialization. That is why we said somebody that has the capacity to attract funds at single digit interest that can attract investors so that we can have good partners on industrialization should succeed him. Because the base has been prepared for industrialization, we now need somebody that will come and implement it. Of course you can see that some of the industries are emerging, they are not built by government, and they are built by investors. The state has been so prepared that it attracts any investor to come in. Recently, Mr President was in this state to perform the ground breaking for the construction of a petrochemical industry at Ibeno, the gas plant at EsitEket was also commissioned the same day. And I can tell you that in less than no time, ground breaking will be done again for fertilizer plant and others. It is not government that is going to build, but government have created the enabling environment to attract major investors that would come in and invest in industrialization. Recently too, a lot of funds have been allocated to AkwaIbom for Medium and Small Scale Businesses from the Federal Government, I think AkwaIbom had the second highest after Delta. If those funds are channelled through appropriate organized sectors like NASSI, NASME, and NASIMA, the people are there with their different business plans. And even when this fund comes, it should not be disburse by government or government agency. This has to go to a financial institution that will be able to handle these issues, and keep to the rule of lending and recovery at any point in time.

The next governor will consider this aspect since we are already on ground with our business plans. I think government should go that way. I want to strongly advise that government should do something about establishing industrial parks. Government should acquire lands and set aside as an industrial area by building warehouses, and open roads there. They should also make sure that power is central, be it generated or from the national grid, and rent them to small and medium scale industrialists. That can also serve as collateral for an industrialist to be able to access funds anywhere, be it from bank of industry or whatever. But an industrialist should be patient to get funds from the real source that will not be a cut throat matter which will not attract more than a single digit interest, and will have a period of moratorium for industries to be put on ground before you start production, and then payment. Moratorium period should not be less than one year or more, and the payment should be spread such that an industrialist will be able to pay back. It should be a very long term loan, commercial banks are giving short term lending, and that will not help industrialization in anyway. Am not an economist, but I have been in the system helping pilot the affairs of small and medium scale industrialists. 

I have attended series of workshops and seminars, and much other training, so I understand the entire process. That is why people like us do not rush to get funds for industry; we are trying on our own as much as possible to come up with the raw materials first in form of agriculture.

What happened to the money set aside by government for industrialization?
Money could be set aside for industrialization but the grounds are not ready, it cannot be release. You don’t release money for industrialization into the system without grounds being ready to ensure that the impact is felt, and the right people do access it. If you release the money into the system and people get it and divert it maybe for trading, is not helping the economy. When you are talking of industrialization, it will help the state so much to reduce unemployment to the barest minimum or even eliminate it completely because people will be employed. If you establish one viable industry today, it will take at least twenty to thirty people, another one will do the same just like that till all the people are employed. Government cannot employ people, it is through industrialization that people are employed, and all manners of people do have what to do, call it skill labour or anything. Any type of job is available there for people to work. So our young men and women will not be jobless anymore on the street, and when they are engaged, their orientation, behaviour and everything will change.

As the International President of Akwa Ibom Consolidation Alliance (ACA), what informed the formation of the group?
The formation of ACA came up as a result of loyalty, those that are very loyal to our uncommon transformer Governor put their heads together and decided to float a support group, a family that will be able to stand with our Governor to the last day in office. And also help him come up with a successor that is credible enough to continue with the uncommon transformation, and also consolidate on what he has already done on the ground. This successor must not only be credible but acceptable to the generality of Akwa Ibom people. You know it is not an easy task, that was how the group came up and worked on the ground for a very long time to be able to search and come up with a very credible and acceptable individual who when he formally came into the state; people doubted that he has not been working closely with the state for some times but they never knew he has been doing quite a lot to assist a lot of people as far as Akwa Ibom is concerned. That was the sole aim of the group which is just to support the Governor, and also help him come up with a successor. And the successor we have found, he is on course, and ACA is driving the consultation of that particular successor. When you hear Udom is right, when you hear Udom is the best, is all about that successor. Also help the Governor to make sure that power rotates for purposes of equity, justice and fair play. 

Uyo Senatorial District has kept the governorship for two times, since the state creation, Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District is now enjoying the governorship, and Eket Senatorial District since the state creation have not even tasted. So we believe the 2015 governorship should move to Eket Senatorial District, hence our slogan. When we say ACA…., it is replied consolidation, ACA….., it is replied continuity, ACA……, it is replied let God’s will be done again and again, and again. And we will ask, ACA ukeoooo, the masses will say ACA Eket, we say amasim Eketeh? The people will say Udom is the best because we have found the best for Akwa Ibom, the one that is coming to industrialize the state, the one that has the pedigree and the capacity that is internationally connected. The one that knows the right button to press and the right number to call for investors to move into Akwa Ibom. The one that knows the right button to press for finances to come into Akwa Ibom for industrialization at single of no interest rate at all. That is the type of person we need, with the type of connection, and we believe when implemented, it will be the best for Akwa Ibom.

Now that Akpabio’s in-law, Mike Sebastine has indicated interest to contest the 2015 governorship; what is the position of ACA on this matter bearing in mind the family relationship he has with the Governor and Sir Emem Akpabio?
I don’t know how people understand matters, we are all political animals. Am not bound to think the same way you think or believe in what you believe in. Sir Emem Akpabio being an in-law to Mike Sebastine does not change the political thinking of Emem Akpabio. And Mike Sebastine also being an in-law to Emem Akpabio has the right to think politically the way he likes. If Mike is interested in governorship he has the right to contest which the constitution allows that. He has the right which nobody can stop him, but that does not affect Emem or change his political thinking.
Sir Emem Akpabio is the BoT chairman of ACA, and he is solidly behind ACA and Udom Emmanuel and the succession plan of our dear Governor, Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio CON. I do not see how that should border anybody, ACA remains the way it is, very intact. Any day that Mike declares publicly, go and watch how many known ACA members or ACA faces that you will see there. Mike has gone out, he is on his own. Maybe according to his believe that he equally is qualified to be the governor of Akwa Ibom state, and there is nothing wrong with that. He has the right to think that way.
Since the inception of ACA, Mike has never been active as far as am concern. So his exit does not affect ACA in anyway, and I know he is not going out with even one soul apart from himself.

The exit of Mike Sebastine from ACA you are talking about, how did it happen?
Up till the time of this interview, I have not received resignation letter from Mike Sebastine. We have the constitution of ACA which made it clear that if you absent yourself for sometimes in meetings, you will be replaced, and the replacement has been done. Rt, Hon. Victor Antai is now the new deputy International President of ACA based on the constitution of ACA since he has absented himself for sometimes, and we noticed he was no more attending meetings. There is no vacuum in ACA, that place had to be filled up which was done. So I have not received his resignation letter, have not heard from him, and I cannot speak for him. We did what the constitution of ACA says that if you absent yourself in meetings consecutively for three times, you stand to lose your position and that is what we implemented. You know there must not be any compromise in any serious organization; you have to follow the rules and keep to the tenets of the organization.

Many people belief that Victor Antai is still loyal to Umana Okon Umana being one of the core loyalists to the former SSG while in office, what is your take on that?
Who among others that are even working today or nursing governorship ambition would say they never supported the former Secretary to Government at a point in time? Some of them are even floating other groups campaigning for governorship, but Victor Antai has not done that. If at a point in time he supported former Secretary to Government, and at a point things changes, he decides to give loyalty to who he believes in, I think he has a stronger loyalty and commitment to Godswill Akpabio. And he decided to go the direction that Godswill Akpabio wants. As at that time nobody knew direction, everybody just supported anybody that he or she wants to support, but when our leader came up with a succession plan well charted, everybody that is loyal to him had to fall into that succession plan. Those that are not loyal to him do not want to fall into it even if most of them still have their strength from this particular government. It is normal that things like that must happen, Victor Antai is a man of his word, he is a man with integrity who cannot move from pillar to post. His loyalty is for Godswill Akpabio which he is firmed on that, let nobody say anything to tarnish the image of another person.

Before now, many people especially those in government believed that the governor was supporting his former SSG for 2015 governorship, maybe that was why they all went the same direction. What will happen if the governor changes his mind against Udom for another aspirant?
I have never heard from the governor that he was supporting his former SSG, Umana Okon Umana. It was insinuations, people only tried to read the governor’s body language which they did wrongly. My Governor doesn’t change his mind anyhow, he is always firm, when he says one it is one, he is a promise keeper anytime any day, he does not change his mind. This time I am telling you that he has presented his successor to us, and now we are supporting his own successor, but before, he never did that. People were exaggerating, thinking they could read the body language of the Governor, but unfortunately they were not able to read, and if they did, they did it wrongly. Ofcourse the Governor never presented that person people thought to us.

What is your relationship with Sir Emem Akpabio?
Biologically, I have no relationship with Emem Akpabio. Politically, I like his person; I like his style of politics. He is firm, very pragmatic and hardworking go-getter which I also fall into that category. I love him in that area. Since I have found my match, I definitely believe together we can succeed. We are to join force and pursue the goal, and we are getting it.

We have witnessed so many socio political groups during election time like this but today they are no more, what will happen to ACA after 2015 election?
It all depends on leadership and what the group is all about. I have been an International Coordinator of Iman Ibom Support for Good Governance, am still holding that position, and that group is still alive. Come to Etinan any day anytime, if it is not Iman Ibom Support for Good Governance, you can never be delivered politically. We are very firm on ground. Then other groups, I don’t know, it depends on leadership. If the leader can pilot the group very well and forget about selfish interest, the group will survive. It is just normal in any large group that whenever the leader nurses any political ambition, thinking of contesting one thing or another, certainly there will be division. Maybe that was not the sole purpose of having established the group, people that may not believe in such ambition will disassociate themselves from the group. So what keep groups together is just for that group to exist as a family irrespective if it has turn to a mass movement, and people sit down to discuss matters even having people with ambitions in the group, is sorted out amicably without offending others. With such arrangement, it is very easy for such a group to survive for a very long time. I have been an Apostle of group politics over the years, I played it with late Obong Isemin, we had our group, and we were winning everything at that time, I was playing a key role in the group. I played it with late Obong Etukudo Ekpro, we had our group, and we were winning everything by the time I was there. We never allow ambitions to kill the group, even when Ekpro was nursing ambition, and it came to a point that a consensus be reach in Akwa Ibom when Obong Attah was allow to go for governorship, heaven did not fall. Ekpro’s group still there intact, ambition did not kill it until Ekpro died, and we all scattered looking for how to start a new group. That was how I went and started Iman Ibom Support for Good Governance, and others went and started their own. I can assure you that a group can only be sustainable depending on the leadership, sincerity, honesty, and transparency, those are the things that make a group sustainable.

What measures have you put in place to ensure that ACA survives beyond 2015?
But we are going to install the next government in 2015; do you think after installing the government we are going to fade away and give way for anybody to come and advise the Governor wrongly? That will not happen. ACA is a political family which will always remain. A political family is a political family, unless you put up an ad-hoc group, and then is dissolved after the purpose. ACA is not an ad-hoc group, it is a political family that has turned into mass movement because many people embraced it and like the ideals, philosophies of ACA. And I can assure anybody, ACA is one of the sustainable groups as far as we are concern.

Can anybody within the ACA family aspire for 2015 governorship in Akwa Ibom?
ACA has her aims and objectives. We have just one person for governorship that one is made known to every member. If you want to contest as a member of ACA you will leave the group, and be on your own to contest. We are pursuing one goal, and there is no divided interest in ACA. That one person is Udom.

Who is Udom?
Udom is somebody we have found which is the best for Akwa Ibom state. He is the man that will lead us to the next stage of development come 2015. People should find out who Udom is. You can be seeing billboards that reads, Udom Correct, Udom is Right. Anybody who does not know who Udom is should investigate from there, when we get into full blast campaign, I will unveil who Udom is. When I say Udom is the best, know that he is the best, go to Etinan and ask, I don’t go into something that is not good. If I say I don’t need you, I don’t need you. And if I don’t know you very well that you can perform, I can never give you my support. I was the Director General of Sam Ikon’s campaign for second term that makes him become the speaker of AkwaIbom state House of Assembly today. I told him, keep your lifestyle, you may be the speaker from the beginning to the end, and nobody will impeach you. And I think he has gone beyond the stage of being impeached. I can assure you that anybody I support, I must study very well and see that he has a good life, he can relate well with people, and he will do the right thing at the right time. I’m citing that as an example, if I was not convinced about Udom I won’t have been a part of it all, not to talk of steering the ship.
ACA is piloting the consultation, they will pilot the campaign, I know him as a man of integrity who has all it takes including the exposure, credentials, and connections both nationally and internationally.   

What are the political chances of Udom emerging the next governor of Akwa Ibom?
We have consulted widely, and the acceptability is there. This is not about big men; it’s about pedigree and capacity. There is one Camry they called big for nothing, I’m not saying anybody is big for nothing, but am tell you that is not about big men which may be big for nothing. We are talking about pedigree, integrity, capacity, ability to handle leadership, which is my area of assessment. And not the size or how wealthy one maybe, not also how many years one may be in politics. Those ones we don’t take into consideration. Akpabio that has come to perform, how many years did he stay in politics before he contested and won as a governor?

What is the strength of ACA in the PDP?
Many of us are members of the PDP, there could be others who are not members of PDP but are ready to support. That is why we have over 450 groups affiliating with ACA.

It contains all manners of people, people who may not even be registered PDP members or caring PDP cards. We are preparing for general election in addition to nomination. ACA is solidly founded in all the wards in Akwa Ibom state, by the time we go for primary contest, we are very sure and confident that we are going to win massively. We are going to win massively and convincingly even at the delegate election because we are firm on ground. Any ACA person that will stand election as delegate will win.

How will you assess the performance of the governor in the last 7 years of his administration?
I can score him 90 percent he has taken Akwa Ibom to a level that nobody can bring us down again nationally. In the comity of states we stand tall, where ever Akwa Ibom name is mentioned is respected. The next person that is coming is good enough to have the kind relation nationally like our Governor is having. I can assure you that Akpabio has been the best for Akwa Ibom now. He has done so well in terms of transforming Akwa Ibom and linking Akwa Ibom to national politics, he has garner respect nationally and internationally to Akwa Ibomites.

What are the areas you will want the next administration to concentrate on?
Absolutely on industrialization, industrialization is what we need. I don’t want to hear Akwa Ibom being called a civil service state any more. This state should be heavily industrialized; it will help the economy of the state. The state will be independent without waiting for allocation from the Federal Government, at a time Lagos state did not receive allocation and they were never affected in any way because they survived on industries that are there on ground in the state. When industrialization takes place, unemployment will be a thing of the past, which is what an incoming government should do. And also continue to build human capacity, and empower the human beings. Agricultural sector should be developed because it is the source of raw materials for a lot of industries, maintain the infrastructures that are on ground, and do more to clean-up the state such that there will not be much difference between the rural and urban areas like what the present Governor is doing which is linking Uyo to other places. When those infrastructures are build-up, you may drive to Ibesikpo but you will not know you are out of the city. Every local government headquarters should be properly linked with the city like Ini/ Ikono, Obot Akara area which roads are very bad they should be opened-up. Industrialization should be faced very squarely, one thing people don’t know is that; you can’t use state allocations to build industries and do other things, like Udom is having the capacity to attract funds to Akwa Ibom through the international communities, he should do that while using the state funds from Federal Government allocation to continue the infrastructural development. When that is done, the state will be better than what we see now.

What is the position of ACA concerning the 2015 Presidential election?
ACA is working very hard at the Federal level. ACA in Akwa Ibom is TAN at the Federal level. The structure of ACA is also the structure of TAN; it is Jonathan this way, Udom this way to be delivered. It is the same structure for the two purposes, so ACA is working very hard under TAN to make sure Mr President is given a second term in office.

What measure has the PDP in Akwa Ibom put in place to ensure a credible party primaries coming up in the next few months?
PDP our dear party is a very credible party, the party is supreme, and we respect the leadership of the party. He has the capacity, the pedigree, and what it takes to conduct a credible election in Akwa Ibom internally to make sure the right person emerges the candidate of the party. There is no doubt about that. I’m happy the leadership of the PDP has been able to hold the party together, and we have not heard of any crisis in the party. The party is very intact, that means the party is ready to deliver with fairness, justice. And I know the person of the state chairman; he does his things very right, and believes in what is the best at all times. I believe there will be internal democracy at the primaries, and make sure it is properly conducted for the best to emerge, so I believe so much in the party.

Your last word for Akwa Ibom people.
We should continue to work hard to sustain democracy that we are enjoying today. Akwa Ibomites should always stand by the best that will continue to move Akwa Ibom forward. We should not go back to the wood, we should all come out and support the best who will help Akwa Ibom to grow better, and who will also help our teeming youths gain employment.

Uyo State Constituency Election: Barr. Stella Udoh stands tall ... As she gets nod and blessings of Offot Ukwa and Etoi Clan Councils

It was a stellar outing for the Uyo State Constituency hopeful, Lady Barr Stellar Ezekiel Udoh penultimate weekend, when she consulted with two of the four clans of the constituency to declare her intentions to contest for the House of Assembly seat come 2015 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party as her visits was heralded with total support and rain of royal blessings by the royal fathers to guarantee her optimal success. 

The first phase of the consultation visits which first port of calling debut at the palace of the Clan Head of Etoi, His Royal Highness, Etebom Effiong Akpan on Friday August 29th, 2014 and later proceeded to and climaxed at the palace of the Clan Head of Offot  Ukwa,  His Royal Highness Etebom Obong Sylvanus Okon (JP) the following day both in Uyo amidst unfeigned endorsement and assurance of unstinting support by royal fathers to ensure a resounding victory for the aspirant at the upcoming 2015 polls.

Setting the centre stage for the House of Assembly hopeful to declare her intentions to the royal fathers, the Director General of the Divine Change  2015 Campaign Organization, a group tasked with the mandate to ensure the successful ascension of Lady Barr Stella Ezekiel Udoh to the House, Hon Joseph Edem held the royal fathers spell-bound as he read the intimidating profile of the legal luminary to the house before the hopeful majestically rose to declare her intentions.

 Making her declaration to the clans visited, the legal luminary, Lady Barr Ezekiel Udoh an ebullient law doyen who graduated from the prestigious University of Uyo as the overall best student of the Faculty of Law  made her intention to contest for the seat of Uyo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly known to the royal fathers and pleaded for their support for the actualization of her mandate even as she noted that her clan Oku and Ward 2 where she hails from was particularly  neglected and marginalized for decades in both elective and political appointment and sued for the imbalance to be corrected in the spirit of maintaining and enhancing the principle of equity, justice  and fairness.

 Lady Barr. Udoh who spoke glowingly on her wealth of experience in the legal profession which she said she has put in more than 20 years of service stated that her academic exposure and exploits within and outside the country has really prepared her for the seat she is vying for and that her emergence as Member Representing Uyo State Constituency in the house would yield the desired dividends of effective representation to the people and as well change the status quo.

  She further stated that if given the mandate, her vision for the constituency was for her to chart a new and responsible leadership course that will improve the lives of the people through her four-point agenda which she said was to ensure a qualitative representation, equal distribution of the dividends of democracy across the clans, chart Economic Empowerment and Development  Initiative to better the lives of the people and attract developmental projects to the area to restore its status as the number one catchment area of the state.

Speaking  further in praise of Barr. Stella Ezekiel’s eligibility to ascend the seat of Uyo State constituency in the State Assembly, Obong Hon. Daniel Udobio, a prominent and respected voice in the area extolled the leadership, academic and political virtues of the aspirant and rallied the support of his kinsmen towards her pursuit, divulging that if Barr Stella Ezekiel was not a credible person he would not have keyed into her ambition. Chief Udobio further corroborated the aspirant’s exposition on the political succession formula in the area and noted that right from the era of Eastern Nigeria, none of the Oku Clan indigenes has ever ascended beyond the position of a councilor and pleaded his royal colleagues to rise in defense of truth, equity, fairness and justice as the train has shifted to Oku Clan.

 In a separate response, the of Chairman, Etoi Clan Council, Obong Dr. Cosmas Sampson a.k.a. Eminka thanked the aspirant for the honour done him by consulting him to declare her intentions and assured her of the support of his Clan.  Obong cosmas maintained that he was really amazed by the intellectual capability of Lady Barr Stella Ezekiel and stated that politics “is a game for intellectuals not riff-raffs” and reiterated that Etoi people will only queue behind the most credible candidate which he said was found in the person of Barr Stella Ezekiel.

The assurance of the royal father was further boosted when he said ’’we are sending you to be signboard in the house to change the status quo’’.

  In his vote of thanks, Hon. killian Thompson thanked the people of Etoi for their kind reception accorded the team and prayed God to cause the prayers to swiftly come to fruition; just as prayers were also offered to the aspirant by Obong Eno Thompson on behalf of Etoi Clan Council.

 Meanwhile at the Offot Ukwa Clan Council, the royal father, His Highness Obong Ettebom Sylvanus Okon (JP) openly admitted that it was the rightful turn of Ward 2 to produce the House of Assembly member so as to balance the political rotation formula. Ettebom Sylvanus assured the House of Assembly hopeful of the total support of Etoi people and personally assured her of his own vote, the gesture that other members of the Clan Council equally emulated.     

The royal father however offered words of advice to the aspirant urging her not to allow herself to be intimidated by anyone to abandon her ambition but should rather be resilient in her pursuit as the people were solidly behind her “Go! Go and break the covenant of failed leadership in Uyo State Constituency” Obong Okon charged.

 Etebom Sylvanus Okon equally urged the people to be firm in their support to the aspirant of their choice rather than trading their interest on flimsy and trivial benefits which he said lasted for only a little time. The royal father also offered blessing and prayers to the aspirant and joined forces with members of his Clan Council to urge the aspirant not to forget the people when she emerges as member of the house.

 In her vote of thanks Obonanwan Ubom thanked the royal father and members of the Clan Council for the warm reception and support given the team and promised that Lady Ezekiel will live up to the trust reposed in her. 

Among the personalities that made the delegation that visited the Etoi and Offot Ukwa Clan Councils were Chief (trado Doctor) Daniel Udobio, Udu Oku 1 of Oku Clan Council. Hon Joseph Edem, Chairman Divine Change 2015 Campaign Organization, Sir Ezekiel Okon Udoh husband to the House of Assembly hopeful, Lady Barr Stellar Ezekiel Udoh, the House of Assembly hopeful, Hon Ekong Ituen, Obong Donatus, Hon Sunday Udokang, Obong Emmanuel Mofat Udoekong among a host of others.

Aniekan Akpan as a metaphor of performing Lawmaker BY AMANAM JIMMY

The member represenging Ukanafun State constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Aniekan Simon Akpan has internalized dividends of democracy among the good people of his constituency. He has set at liberty those bound by cruel chains of poverty and those held in tantrums of social malaise by deploying his mandate to the service of his people as an instrument of positive change.

In line with global democratic standard practice, Elder Akpan has expressed commitment to the course of reinvigorating living conditions of the grassroots to uplift them to a proud social stratum where they breathe a fresh air of good governance. In other words, the lawmaker has clearly defined governance to suit the emerging realities of our millennial trend.

This is clearly typified by the flurry of commendations and endorsements showered on him by the vast majority of Ukanafun people who have repeatedly appealed to him to spare them one more chance by taking another turn of effective representation in 2015. This is informed by the fact that he has exemplified political leadership in the context of acceptable democratic norms which stress development of the people as a yardstick for effective representation.

 

This is why he focuses on the development and integration of his constituency; despite efforts by blackmailers to devise untoward strategies and  a gambit to score cheap political goals. An apostle of politics without bitterness, Elder Akpan has used outstanding and visible performance profile to dwarf the orchestrated propaganda by stepping up performance even as he has refused to stoop to join issues with parochial and clannish sentiments. In this regard, he has repeatedly pointed out that there can be hope for a society which acts as one big family, and not as many separate ones. He vision centres on building one critical mass for the development and progress of his constituents.

The lawmaker believes in his people and the people have expressed their love by the massive support he has enjoyed from them. Indeed, he sees government as a “contrivance of human wisdom” to provide for human wants and men have a right that these wants should be provided for by this wisdom. He has sincerely justified the mandate given him and confidence of his people by routing dividends to them and that is the glue binding him and the electorate.

As an effective representative of the people, he has reported progress in many ways. In line with the laudable policy of free and compulsory education of Governor Godswill Akpabio administration, seven classroom blocks, one assembly hall; four market shops at Urua Nyeme Iko and four lockup shops at Urua Affiong. Elder Akpan has also empowered his people with cars, motorcycles, hair-barbing/ hair-do equipment and generating sets.

The lawmaker has also touched the lives of widows by building houses for them and giving them a lifeline of cash and motorcycles to start small scale business. This is not to mention wrappers and emergency intervention support. No wonder he is flooded with endorsements. This is to check the cancerous “culture of poverty” at the grassroots.

Apart from the Red Roof Revolution in the primary schools, Elder Akpan has provided grants to more than 100 students in institutions of higher learning. Many project students have also enjoyed the succour of the lawmaker who has donated exercise books to aid the free education policy in his constituency. In promoting unity among his people, Elder Akpan spearheaded the re-opening of Government Central School, Ohaobu – an Igbo-speaking community in Ukanafun Local Government Area ceded to the old Cross River State (now in AKS) to ease administration of the people. Elder Akpan who is the deputy chairman, House Committee on Education, by this gesture, has achieved a noble feat other political leaders had developed cold feet long before now. Speaking during the visit of Commissioner of Education. Prof. (Mrs) Atim Antai to Ohaobu on 1st August, 2014, Elder Akpan assured the people of more dividends of democracy even as the government had provided health facility and electricity to them, adding that the process of integration is gradual.

He stressed that politics is for unity and development and no for enmity and destruction. He canvassed for their support to the local and state governments, just as he appealed for understanding and patience for politics to do magic of development. This audacious statesmanly sagacity and pragmatic political evangelism to a long neglected people rekindles the hope of Ohaobu in a state they can proudly call their own.

It is because of his disposition as a student friendly political leader that the National Association of Ukanafun students (NAUS) honoured Elder Akpan as the Grand commander of Ukanafun students – the first and only person to be so honored by the student body. The foundation of every state is the education of the youth. The Elders, Youths, Women groups, Socio-political associations have also hailed him for performance. Besides, Elder Akpan has made the good health of his constituents his priority. Apart from visiting and paying bills for the sick, he has generously applied the scriptures in this connection as only a merry heart doeth good like medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones (Proverbs 17:22). 

 

He donated equipment worth N3 million to Health Centre at Ikot Oku Usung; donated drugs to the health centre and sponsored free medical services. Generous assistance has also been given to accident victims. The physically challenged persons have also enjoyed life supporting equipment. By this, he has prolonged many lives and provided the vital principle of bliss. As the saying goes, the care of human life and happiness and not their destruction is the first legitimate object of a good government.

A lover and promoter of sports among his young and active constituents, Elder Akpan once observed that the effort is to encourage the development of sporting talents in the sub sector. He sponsored the first Ukanafun football competition for secondary schools in conjunction with Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON). The lawmaker also donated cash, trophies, jerseys, boots, and other sporting equipment to boost sports talent-hunt among students in secondary schools. So far, these tournaments have yielded the envisaged positive results.

Elder Akpan’s contribution to the effective working of the 5th state assembly is amplified by his intelligent contributions. Before his assumption of office as chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts, he had served as chairman, House Services Committee. He is also the deputy chairman, House Committee on Education. Impeccable sources at the House of Assembly said the lawmaker has brought some innovation to Public Accounts scrutiny by bringing the experience of a digital technocrat to bear in the new assignment. He has meticulously tidied the public accounts preceding the 5th assembly. This pioneering effort of delivering service on schedule is one of the imperatives for deepening democracy and a poignant example of good governance.  

His undiluted loyalty and open door policy to accommodate all and sundry have been exemplary, although many people are reported to have abused this gesture. It is for all these that he has been described as a metaphor of a performing lawmaker.

Saturday, August 30, 2014 remains another milestone towards the victory march to the Government House, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State as the leading Governorship hopeful Obong Bassey Albert Akpan was received by the people of Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area at a grand reception organized in his honour.

The expectations of what that significant event held was not thought of at the break of dawn, but history shone on the unending horizon as the mammoth crowd of supporters, friends, party chieftains of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, elected members of the different organs of government, the youths, traditional institution, the women, children, elders as well as the clergy trooped out in their thousands to honour and receive a worthy son of Ibiono Ibom soil, Obong Bassey Albert Akpan, the Enin Ibiono for his illustrious and meritorious service to his fatherland.

It was also another perfect opportunity for the people of Ibiono Ibom to show their undying support and love for President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for his giant strides in office so far and to declare their unflinching support for the President’s re-election bid ahead of the 2015 general elections.

The people of Ibiono Ibom and by extension Itu which comprises a Federal Constituency overwhelmingly at that landmark reception at the historic Ikpa Pavilion declared their support to vote President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for a deserved second term as his Transformation Agenda had charted significant changes in various sectors of the Nigerian economy and the recent economic rating as the biggest economy in Africa has strategically positioned our great country under the Jonathan administration for better and bigger window opportunities for investors to take advantage of the blooming possibilities that abound in our ever flourishing economy.

The roll call of personalities at the grand reception made a glaring statement, that Obong Bassey Albert Akpan has been widely accepted by the people of Akwa Ibom State as their next Governor on May 29, 2015.

The presence of the representative of the good people of Itu/Ibiono Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Kenneth Archibong who openly charged his constituents to support Bassey Albert for Governor provided a direction which was simply confirmed once again.

Other notable dignitaries at that epoch making event included Rt. Hon. Ekaete Ebong OKon, member, representing Itu State Constituency, in the Akwa Ibom State Legislature, Hon. Kufre Etuk of Uruan State Constituency, Hon. Bassey Etienam who represents the great people of Urue Offong Oruko State Constituency, Hon. Paul Owoh of Ini State Constituency, while Hon. Godwin Ekpo, the Council Chairman of Ibiono Ibom as the Chief host made it glaring that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria gives every Nigerian the opportunity as far as you are above eighteen years of age to stand and be voted for in an election as he  further described Bassey Albert Akpan as an individual who served the state with all his heart without any scar and gave the people a strong focus as the centre of navigation of the uncommon transformation success in the Akpabio administration.

The Vice Chairman of the P[DP, Uyo Senatorial District, Barr. Dominic Okon was also present along with former commissioners, council chairmen, legislators and strong chieftains of the ruling party as they came unanimous with their beliefs that the next mandate of leadership for their dear state, Akwa Ibom State lies with the leadership of Bassey Albert Akpan.

The crowd kept thronging in their thousands to witness history, the heavens shone as the rains refused to come down despite the chilly weather that prevailed all day. The glorious divine call by God to anoint Bassey Albert Akpan as the next Akwa Ibom State Governor meets the wishes of the people of the state who have shown love, acceptance and great eagerness to identify, share, participate and fully ensure the emergence of this enigma as their next leader.

The resounding words of faith by the people of Akwa Ibom State to hold on to their dreams and never shake even in the times of trouble has shown that today’s electorates are no more passive on- lookers to the dynamics of politics but they will be active partners in the sustenance and development of Akwa Ibom State especially as we open the chapter on the industrial renaissance.

When the various representatives across the ten Federal Constituencies who spoke one after the other gave an assessment from the people of the different areas, the echoes of our love, one choice, one man, a massive victory and a new leader in Bassey Albert Akpan kept reverberating all through the event and across the land.

The message continues to spread of the coming of OBA to govern Akwa Ibom State and the people have continued to generate excitement just like in 2006 when Governor Godswill Akpabio also was the choice of the people.

One significant milestone of that grand reception lies in the fact that the good people of Ibiono Ibom have expressed so much gratitude to Governor Akpabio for grooming their son Bassey Albert Akpan to serve the state at a strategic period for seven years in a very landmark portfolio as he has distinguished himself meritoriously to the glory of God and acknowledgement of his Principal, Governor Akpabio and the people of Akwa Ibom State.

When you go into war, the home front must be in firm control, united and strong as you march forward and the blessings of the Paramount Ruler of Ibiono Ibom HRM Edidem Ime Udousoro Inyang who led other traditional rulers to the historic reception captured the moment of the day.

In the words of the erudite and well respected Monarch as he spoke and blessed Bassey Albert Akpan, “Be strong, Be courageous for you are on the road to victory. The Lord is with you my son’’!!

For Bassey Albert Akpan, the twinkle star on the Akwa Ibom horizon, that day would ever remain memorable in his lifetime for the love which the people, friends and associates showered on him, for as he climbed the podium to speak, the emotions were high, his aura had charged the people and he sang in praises to God continuously coming down to praise God with the people who danced and chorused even as the rain started drizzling lightly. 

             
He described the reception accorded him as historic and the crowd unprecedented which showed the unwavering love the people of the state have for him.
Bassey Albert Akpan eulogized President Goodluck Jonathan for his sterling leadership qualities as his Transformation Agenda had set Nigeria on the path of a re-birth as he re-affirmed that the good people of Ibiono Ibom would re-elect President Jonathan overwhelmingly for a second term in office.

He described the Transformation Agenda of President Jonathan as the best blue print that has changed the economic future of Nigeria for the best.

Bassey Albert further re-assured the people in his remarks that he was in the race to succeed Governor Godswill Akpabio as he also re-emphasized that he will defeat other aspirants in the race while assuring that he will create more employment opportunities for the youths, empower the women, maintain the elders and unite Akwa Ibom State.

He stated that the victory march to the Government House in Uyo had started while he expressed gratitude to Governor Godswill Akpabio for the confidence he had in his qualities to serve Akwa Ibom State for seven years with destination.

For Bassey Albert Akpan, that glorious home-coming has solidified the foundation towards the next electoral victory and the song to the new dawn has come to stay. God bless the king.

N.G.O rescues 3 children from death on allegation of witchcraft, parents killed

Three children from Unyenge Village in Mbo Local Government Area, on Monday escaped being lynched by irate youths on allegation that they are witches after their father; one Mr. Etim Okon Esin was murdered by unknown assailants the previous day.

The children namely Shedrack Etim Esin (14years), Israel Etim Esin (10years) and Miracle Etim Esin (7 years) were rescued by a non-Governmental Organization known as African children Aid Education and Development Foundation (ACAEDF) at Mbo and taken to the Nigerian Police Force, Divisional Headquarters, Enwang Mbo were they were handed over to the NGO for caring while investigation continuous.

Speaking with our correspondent, the project Director of ACAEDF, Mr. David Emmanuel said that the Organization received information that the children’s lives were being threatened on allegation that they possessed witchcraft after their father had been assassinated by yet to be arrested persons.
Mr. Emmanuel commended the Nigerian Police in Mbo for responding swiftly to emergencies in the area and thanked the State government for the child Right Law which prohibits the victimization and stigmatization of children on allegation of witchcraft.

He called on the police to investigate the gruesome murder of Mr. Etim Okon Esin and bring the culprits to book.

Investigation reveals that the late Etim had in July 2014 through his solicitors petitioned the area commander, Nigerian Police, Oron that his life was being threatened by certain individuals (names withheld) on allegation that he possesses witchcraft power but unfortunately on September 3, 2014, Mr. Etim was killed in his home at midnight by suspected assassin not unconnected with the existing witchcraft allegation.

The Divisional Police Officer Mbo, ASP Ibrahim Muhammed acknowledged receiving report on the assassination of late Etim Okon and the rescue of the three children.

AKAF endorses Udom for Governorship

The Akwa Ibom Ambassadors Forum (AKAF) has urged the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Udom Emmanuel to contest the governorship seat.

Their position was made known to the public last week Wednesday during their solidarity visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, Information Drive, Uyo.

Addressing members of the Press, the Board of Trustees Chairman of the forum, Dr. Effang S. Effang stated that the AKAF’s resolve to support the SSG came after a painstaking analysis of contending issues and contenders to the office of the governor in 2015, adding that his enormous managerial ability and exposure has brought about changes and a beacon of hope for the continuity of the uncommon transformation beyond 2015.

Dr. Effang, while announcing the formal birth of Akwa Ibom Ambassadors Forum (AKAF), noted that the forum is a socio-political group whose sole objective is to promote good governance and the wellbeing of Akwa Ibom citizens, and the nation in general. He maintained that the forum will mobilize support for the actualization of Udom Emmanuel as the next governor who according to him, will be able to consolidate on the uncommon transformation bid.

He called on the people to support Udom Emmanuel while maintaining that the AKAF has come as an initiative of private citizens to drum support for the protection, preservation and continuation of the next phase of the uncommon transformation after May 29, 2015.

According to Effang, “Akwa Ibom Ambassadors Forum with its National Secretariat at 27 Ewet Street was borne out of the desire to see the uncommon transformation agenda of our great mentor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, continue beyond 2015 to an extent that the State in the near future will be turned into an industrial hub where hope, prosperity and stability of the citizenry will be assured.

Speaking further, the BOT chairman emphasized that the forum was established with the purpose of ensuring sustenance of the present credible leadership in Akwa Ibom State, with its related development as well as the transformation of the polity; while appealing to all players in the political sphere to eschew making inflammatory statements, character assassination or terrorist tendencies and personality-based campaigns.

He seized the opportunity to congratulate the Elder Patrick Albert led executive of the State Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on their first successful year in office and prayed for their continued successes in future.

I will make Akwa Ibom a window to Nigeria - Adiakpan

A front line contender in the 2015 gubernatorial race, Mr Owoidigheabasi. J Adiakpan has promised to make Akwa Ibom State the window to Nigeria if he occupies the hiltop top mansion from May 2015. 

 Adiakpan was speaking at dinner held in his honour by friends of O.J Adiakpan (FOJA) as he turned 52 @ lemeridian ibom hotel and golf resort. He promised to bring his experience in the oil and gas sector to bare by  rebuilding communities in Akwa Ibom and creating a destination of choice for business, technology and tourism. 

The aspirant stated that his focus will be qualitative education, industrialization, and wealth creation which will result in the generation of not less than N200billion per month as revenue for Akwa Ibom State. 

He thanked his friends for honouring him with a surprise birthday dinner and also advised politicians to desist from mortgaging the future of generations yet unborn by making decisions that are monetarily influenced with only short term benefits. 

The birthday dinner was graced by professionals, politicians, students, Clergy and women groups who paid glowing tributes to the personality and managerial dexterity of Owoidighe Adiakpan while urging him not to be deterred in his quest to make Akwa Ibom greater. Mr Owoidighe Adiakpan is a Facility Manager with Exxon Mobil and hails from Eket Local Government Area.

Apostle Eduene who described the baby as the Joshua in the bible, noted that if Joshua Okpo Jnr is inculcated with sound moral values, discipline and fear of God, he would grow to become very useful to their parents, himself, family, church, community and society at large. He however invoked the blessings of God upon the baby and assured of God’s divine security over him.

In their separate testimonies, Elder/Mrs. Edet Okpo expressed gratitude to God for the gift of Joshua and promised to train him in the fear and admonition of God. Elder Okpo registered his deep appreciation to Barr./Barr. (Mrs.) Effiong Abia for their support to his family and described Abia as a detribalized and God-fearing politician who has a date and appointment with Akwa Ibom People in 2015.

Edet Okpo and wife also unwavering gratitude to the Rector, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Amb Joshua Okpo for his benevolence to their family and Akwa Ibom People, describing him as a result-oriented administrator with super sensational passion for quality service delivery.

Elder Okpo, a Media Consultant to the academy hinted that the decision of his family to name their son after the Rector of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, was informed by the Rector’s humane-disposition, integrity, humility, generosity, sense of humour and fertile sense of administration, as evident in the holistic repositioning of the premier Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron in line with global best standards.

According to Elder Okpo, Prior to the Rector’s assumption of office, Oron Urban was a volatile zone occasioned by the activities of cult boys, hunger, poverty and unemployment, but the present Management of the Academy under Joshua Okpo has consigned the ugly scenario into the dust bin of history, as some of the youths have been engaged in fruitful and meaningful ventures, while the rector has also initiated relative peace in the once Warring communities of Idua Ukpatta and Udung Okung as part of academy’s corporate social responsibilities.

Elder Okpo thanked the provost, College of Education, Afaha Nsit, Engr. Asuquo Odiong and wife, Engr. Kufre Ekong Inyang of Chevron, Chairman of Okobo and Mbo, Rt. Hon. Princess Felicia Bassey and Rt. Hon. Victor Antai, NUJ Chairman, Elder Patrick Albert for their support to the success of the event and prayed God to reward them bountifully. Okpo however donated a modern keyboard and trumpet to the church, on behalf of his son, Joshua and redecorated the church to meet modern standard.

They referred to Elder Edet Okpo as a committed Media Executive whose diligence in providing accurate and objective reportage has contributed immensely to the growth of their institutions, the state and society at large.
