Rotary Club donates desks to primary school

Rotary International District 1940 of Uyo metropolis has donated one hundred three seater desks to Government Primary School, Afaha I’ve Itam, in the outskirts of Uyo Local Government Area. 

The presentation was made on behalf of the Club by the District Governor, Rotarian Akabom Enebong, who reiterated the commitment of the Rotary Club International to continue in their global efforts at improving the lot of society and making selfless contributions in achieving that goal. 

Rotarian Akabom hinted that, when the Rotary Club District 9140, got report that, there weren’t enough seats for kids in Government Primary School, Afaha Ube Itam to sit and learn, the club did not hesitate to intervene and come to the aid of the pupils in particular and the school in general. 

Accordingly, the Rotary Club Uyo Metropolis donated one hundred, three seater school desks to the school. The District Governor pledged to make further effort to help renovate the classroom blocks which he observed had leaking roof.

On his part, the President of Rotary Club, Uyo Metropolis, Rotarian Charles Essien, in his opening remark thanked the District Governor for approving the request to urgently intervene in what, he said, was the poor state of the facilities in the school. Rotarian Essien charged the school management and students to make good use of the school desks donated, maintain them and improve the standards of education in the school. 

The Commissioner for Education, Akwa Ibom State , Mr Paul Alexander Udofia, commended the Rotary Club Uyo Metropolis for the kind gesture and charged other nongovernmental organisations to emulate the good example set by the Rotary Club Uyo Metropolis. 

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Mrs Valerie Obot, the Commissioner explained that, government alone cannot solve every problem, especially, in the current economic recession which has caused severe decline in resources. He charged other organizations and well meaning individuals to step up to the plate in their social corporate responsibility and assist government provide services to the society. 

He however restated the determination of Governor Udom Emmanuel to reposition the education sector and sustain the free and compulsory education upto secondary school level in the state and continue to massively renovate as well as equip schools in all parts of the state to ensure better study environment for students in the state. 

In her remark at the event, former member of the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, Dr. Ekaette Ebong Okon who is now the Chairman of the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration, expressed delight at the gesture of the Rotary Club of Uyo Metropolis and called for more collaboration between government and non governmental bodies to build a better society for all.

In his vote of thanks, the Head Teacher, Government School, Afaha Ube Itam, Mr Edet Ibanga thanked the Rotary Club of Uyo Metropolis for coming to assist the school, maintaining that, the action will promote the growth of education in the school and the state at large. He said the rapid increase in school enrollment has stretched the facilities in the school and lauded Rotary Club Uyo Metropolis for being the first ever non governmental organization to donate to the school since her inception in 1957. He pledged the readiness of staff to redouble efforts at teaching pupils given the encouragement from Rotary Club Uyo Metropolis . 

The traditional rulers and community leaders of Afaha Ube Itam were on hand to receive the Rotarians and thanked them for the intervention. Highlights of the event was song presentation and dance sketches by pupils of the school while the community women performed Abre dance.
