Crisis rocks Onna PDP over Chapter Chairman position

Crisis rocks Onna PDP over Chapter Chairman position

The Peoples Demo cratic Party (PDP)  Onna Chapter has been thrown into factional crises following the reconstitution of a new executive without constitutional process.

Our correspondent who visited the area on Saturday reports that some party members are warming up for a total disintegration of the party in a local government area that has produced the government-elect of the State.

A party Chieftain and youth leader of the party who gave his name as Mr. Ekam Tobby Ekam while narrating the incident to our reporter said that the Council Chairman, Hon. Uffot Sunday who hails from the same village with the governor-elect has introduced impunity into the party by restructuring the Chapter Exco without due process.

The story goes that the Chapter Chairman, Hon. Okon William Umana openly defected to Accord Party during the election, leaving a vacuum and that instead of filling his deputy Hon. Akpan Inyang Ata into the vacant position, the Council Chairman single handedly appointed the Supervisor for Agriculture in the Council, Hon. Etukudo James Etukudo as the Chapter Chairman of the Party in aberration of the Party Constitution.

“Hon. Akpan Ata is the rightful person to take over as Chapter Chairman of the Party in Onna, he is the Vice Chairman and the party constitution stipulates that in the absence of the Chapter Chairman either by resignation, incapacitation or death, it is the Vice Chairman who takes over”, Mr. Ekom said.

“Why should the Council Chairman act with impunity, only to tell us that he is taking instruction from the governor-elect, Mr. Udom Emmanuel”, there will be no peace in the Party unless the proper thing is done”, Mr. Ekam said further.
Other stakeholders of the party interviewed condemned the attitude of the Council Chairman, describing it as illegal.

When contacted, the Council Chairman, Hon. Uffot Sunday said what has taken place in the party structure in Onna is an unanimous decision of the Chapter and Ward executives of the party.

“We had an enlarged executive meeting of the party on Friday May 16, 2015 at the instant of Onna PDP to restructure the party because some of our members left for Accord Party because of Bishop Samuel Akpan”.

“Among those who openly left are Hon. Okon William Umana who was the Chapter Chairman, the Vice Chairman, Hon. Akpan Ata also worked against the party nicodimusly during the election, thereby incriminating himself with anti-party activities which is against the constitution of our party”, the council chairman said.

He debunked allegation that the governor-elect, Udom Emmanuel ordered him to do the needful.

Meanwhile, the aggrieved members refuted allegation that the Vice Chairman of the party, Hon. Akpan Inyang got himself involved in any anti-party activity, describing the allegation as an “illegal and wicked way to engage in impunity”.
They called on the State Chairman of the Party, Mr. Paul Ekpo to arrest the situation before it snowballs into something else.
