2015: Matters arising BY KENNETH JUDE

2015: Matters arising BY KENNETH JUDE

Events leading up to the 2015 general elections are most engaging much as they are surprising. The various Political parties have commenced nation-wide campaigns to woo voters by selling their manifestoes while hoping that such junketing translates to success at the polls. At the federal level, it is a straight battle between President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and ex Head of State General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 14 election. Both parties have commenced moves to woo voters for the polls; though, this has not been without some skirmishes here and there.

Hammer the harmatan

I had a chat with a senior citizen on issues of climate change and the effect of  human actions on our environment. While I listened to him, he reminded me of the same words I have being hearing since the first week of this year passed without the rains. He said, its being quite very long since I had seen a year starting without rains. I personally remembered too that we had continually gotten accustomed to New Year rains as evidence of a great year in the making. Now that the year had started without rain, I thought, could this mean the year won’t be great?

Many who look out for omens from the weather as the prerogative for how the year will turn out may certainly find this writ uninteresting. However for those who don’t, congrats, you can afford to battle the harmattan. Success isn’t dependent on beliefs of how dry or wet the year begins. Anyone who wants to achieve anything must expect changing condition not necessarily because it affects his chance of succeeding but as part of the challenges he must face.
The harmattan season is often very dry, humid and cold. People struggle to get through with the weather; sometimes one could be lazy, weak and even sickly. There is a chance you may wake up from bed late and maybe have a head with your boss at work over being late. It’s a divergence form the wet season that sees green vegetations blossom, calm air and a vibrant atmosphere. However the condition you may find yourself, it’s the endpoint that really matters. That’s where the focus is.

The 22 musketeers: “On united A’Ibom we stand”
BY ETOKOWO OWOH

Forget the bravado of the Godswill Akpabio clan, the adamancy of PDP National Working  Committee, and the loud silence of the Presidency, if nothing else signals the transition of Akwa Ibom State from continuing to be predominantly controlled by the PDP to one taken over by the opposition, the G22 and its movement to free the State does. As described by one member of the group, it is God’s 22.

Heroes, they say, are not made of huge legs. Big as it is, an elephant does not have an answer to the bites of soldier ants. At the appointed time, Goliath bowed to a single pebble from the sling of David. Muhammad Ali was 22 years when he gave Sony (the ugly bear) Liston a bloody eye and snatched the world heavy weight boxing title. What has remained the unbeatable record in world sports started when Ali was mere 12 years. Faced with the frustration of his stolen bicycle and his subsequent efforts to search and recover it, he landed at a gym and in the hands of a policeman, Joe Elsby Martin, who was training boxers. It was there he was handed a form to register for boxing training when Martin heard the conviction in his boast to “whup” (beat) whoever stole his bicycle “even if he is an adult”.

Tales of Nigerians seeking medical treatment abroad

Tales of Nigerians seeking medical treatment abroad
BY VICTOR NKEREUWEM

The population of  Nigerians seeking Medicare outside the shore of this country is increasing at an alarming rate.  It is no longer an exclusive preserve of the elite, but a general practice among Nigerians, irrespective of class or status.

In the 1970s and 80s, when the practice begun, the destination then were developed countries like United States of America (USA), United Kingdom, France, Canada and Germany, among others.  But at present, the hand of the pendulum has swung towards India, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, China and many more.  It will be an understatement to note that medical tourism as it is called, has become a major sector boosting the economy of many of these countries, while Nigeria is draining her foreign reserve.  This term has come to embrace all facets of consumers seeking treatment, improvement or change through wellness outside the coast of Nigeria.

Akwa Ibom is the unerring World Guinness Records holder!

A’Ibom is the unerring World Guinness Records holder!

BY ISRAEL UMOH

The recent news that a Nigerian choral group has broken Guinness World Records, London by assembling 275,272 Christmas carol singers sounded like a tale by moonlight. But a certificate of the world body presented to Akwa Ibom Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio last week in his office in Uyo authenticated the veracity of the news.

The certificate, no doubt, is a remarkable achievement indeed another theme song of Akpabio administration’s uncommon transformation. It was a New Year surprise gift not only to the state government but also to Nigerians and Akwa Ibom people both at home and in the diaspora. The accomplishment by Godswill Akpabio Unity Choir in assembling the largest choir in the world readily squashed the erstwhile record of 15,674 carol singers achieved by CENTI in Bogota, Columbia on December 13, 2013.

PDP campaign rallies- A penetration so deep

PDP campaign rallies- A penetration so deep

BY JOSEPH OKON

As the political activities in Akwa Ibom state moves to the climax with campaigns, the ruling People’s Democratic Party PDP seems to cut the biggest short in the state and made the deepest political penetrations in the state in the build-up to the 2015 governorship election.

It all started last week Friday at Uyo Township Stadium which was filled to the bream with supporters overflowing the stadium to Udo Umana and Obio Imo streets. It was the day PDP formally and officially commenced their movement for actualization of the 2015 election.

The stadium which witnessed what can best be describe as a mammoth crowd of supporters and unprecedented in the history of campaign rallies in the state was attended by senior citizens of the state including those in the opposition camps. The stadium was filled to capacity which send a dangerous signal to those claiming that they will take over government house from the ruling PDP on May 29 to have a re-think.

Towards the attainment of peace in 2015

Towards the attainment of peace in 2015
BY PRISCILLA CHRISTOPHER

Every human being earnestly expects and desires to be at peace with himself, with others, as well as with the community, group, organization, civil societies and the general public. However, a cursory look at the immediate and remote environment reveals that the attainment of the desired peace is somewhat an uphill task. (Nkana, et al).

The reason is that conflicts creeps in uninvited, unexpected and most times, undesired. Most times too, conflict rear its head as a result of man’s conscious manipulation at certain crucial times. This has made conflict an inevitable item in times of election, revenue sharing, allocation of resources, etc where incompatibility of interest always exists.

The sins of our political elite

The sins of our political elite
BY VICTOR NKEREUWEM

Politics is said to be a dirty game, other  says it is not, and that what they see as the dirty aspect of it is the role some characters play in the game.

Plain and simple, the same route that you see in politics today is what is seen in every other spheres of human endeavour.

It is said that man is a political animal, while some are active politicians, some others are more passive.  Inevitably, those who wield state power, who govern, come from the active members of the polity also known as the political elite while the governed otherwise popularly referred to as the people or masses are the more passive members.

Illegitimacy of Udom’s gubernatorial ambition

BY ANIETIE IDUNG

Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel should not delude himself that his is a legitimate quest to govern Akwa Ibom State.  He lost legitimacy right from when his political party, People Democratic Party, PDP, erroneously fielded him as its governorship flag bearer despite clear indictment of the dishonest primaries that produced him.

Consequently, even though promoters of  ‘udomification’ attempt to make people believe they have a man of the moment, they cannot lay claim to popular acceptance.  Even if the entire machinery and resource of state is squandered on manifesting their wish, every vote cast to oppose his success will be worthwhile.

Reading the above caption those who know me and have been following my writing would be  surprised. Some can testify that my style of writing deploys periodic sentences waxed with related anecdotes and satires. I am never known to write with loose sentence. Students of English Language know the inefficacy of loose sentence in building suspense which is a key ingredient in literary works. In other words I never put my main points at the beginning of the sentence nor my Heading. It therefore follows that this writing isn’t my style.

I am not a prophet. Therefore this is not a prophecy. I am only a Deacon who was only ordained a few years ago. Like Jonah I escaped to South Africa but the spirit of God still found me and commissioned me for His service. The commission of the Deacon is simple:
