Monarch urges Mobil to pay $100m compensation over environmental hazard

Chief Effiong Archianga, the Paramount Ruler of Ibeno Local Government Area, has charged Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), Unlimited to pay $100 million compensation over environmental hazard annually in the area.

Archianga, gave the charge in an interview with the newsmen in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

He said that Mobil can’t exploit oil without spilling and therefore should pay mandatory fee of $100 million annually for environmental hazard caused by the reoccurring oil spill in the area.

“During exploration and exploitation, Oil will not fail to spill, Mobil should be compel by relevant stakeholders to pay mandatory fees to Ibeno annually for environmental hazard,’’ he said.


He said that the oil spillage had made Ibeno water to be contaminated, adding that the lives of people of are in danger.

“We are inhaling gas, we are inhaling oil spill which is not good for our health.
“Oil spillage had killed our aquatic lives and destroys everything because of incessant oil spillage in the state.

“Mobil should pay us for environmental hazard so that even when the oil spills to our rooms, we will not talk.

“There is no how Mobil will exploit oil without spilling, we don’t even have aquatic live preservation in Ibeno, the water we drink is contaminated, and now people’s life are at risks,’’ he said.

He said that the compensation was necessary due to incessant oil spill from Mobil facility almost every year.  

The Monarch said that development had cause hardship to Ibeno community and Akwa Ibom people. 

He called on the Federal and State Government to compel Mobil to pay mandatory fees for incessant spillage in the area.

The Monarch appealed to the Management of Mobil to urgently repair their “old pipes’’ to cushion the effect of oil spill in the state.

He called on Federal, State Government, relevant stakeholders to urgently address the effect of oil spill in Ibeno Community and other core oil community.
