Lawmaker wants youths to embrace Agriculture

The member representing Ukanafun State constituency in the House of Assembly, Elder AniekanAkpan has called on youths in the state to embrace agriculture in order to boost food production and reduce the level of unemployment in the state.

Elder Akpan who made the call when he received the Ukanafun Chapter of Youths in Agriculture in his office said it was sad to see the number of youths roam the streets of major cities in search of non-available white collar jobs.

While commending the youths for embracing Agriculture which he described as the mainstay of our economy, Elder Akpan called on them to form themselves into co-operative society so that they can access funds from the banks and government agencies overseeing the development of agriculture not only in AkwaIbom state but Nigeria as a whole.

He described the Ukanafun Youths in Agriculture as friends who he had met and interacted with while in office as council chairman and called on them to join the call for an experienced hand to be elected to represent the area in the state assembly as there are many benefits to gain when an experienced legislator represents the people.

Earlier, the farmers had presented the lawmaker with an excellent award and dressed him as UbokudomInwang MkparawaUkanafun 1 also informed him of the progress made so far since the association was inaugurated. According to them, the Ukanafun Chapter of youths in agriculture had won the 2nd prize for the state at the Nasarawa State National Agriculture Show in 2010 as well as the 1st prize during the 2ndAkwaIbom State Agricultural Submit in 2009 as well as a co-operative society namely AkwaIbom State Youths in Agriculture multipurpose Union, Ukanafun Chapter.

In address presented to the lawmaker by Mr. Iniobong  JUdofia on behalf of members, the young farmers listed some of their challenges to include lack of motor vehicle, funds to extend their farms for large production of food items to meet the growing needs of members of the society.
