AKS Police Command parades another set of child traffickers – decorate 464 officers and men By Godwin Sam

The rising spate of crime in the state involving babies has given reasonable members of the society cause for concern. It can be recalled that on 25th February 2014, the Akwa Ibom State police command paraded a self-acclaimed prophetess with 5 young women, all pregnant and 4 men who put them in the family way only to sell the children when they are born.

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom State under the leadership of Umar Gwadabe as CP has recorded yet another milestone in crime busting when on 3rd march, 2014, its men arrested five people in connection to the sales of a three day old baby. The commissioner of police, Akwa Ibom State command revealed this to newsmen on the 10th of March, 2014 at a press briefing at the state police headquarters Ikot Akpan Abia in uyo.

The arrest followed a report of child theft by Mr Etebong Edem James, the father of the stolen baby of No 33 Urua Ekpa Road in Uyo. Those arrested were; Imaobong Bassey Udo the mother of the baby who allegedly collected N150, 000 for the sale of the baby. Others were Mrs Regina Mfon James and her husband Mr Mfon James Akpan, who allegedly paid N260, 000 to buy the baby, Dr Emmanuel Etim Okon he is alleged to have collected N110, 000 for the deal as he is the one who arranged the infamous deal and personally conveyed the child from the point of delivery at Nna-Enin in Uruan L.G.A to the buyers at no 37 church road in Uyo; and one comfort Udoh Henry was the traditional birth attendant who delivered the baby at Nna- Enin.

Interestingly, a shocking revelation unfolded when the suspected buyer of the baby confessed to the crime, but succinctly stated that her husband Mr Mfon James Akpan never knew anything about the whole child buying business. According to her my husband though i was pregnant, and when i brought back the child, he thought that i just delivered the child. He knew nothing about what i was doing”.
The commissioner of police called on the members of the society to always report any suspected move in the environment to the police and to always cooperate with the police to help them fight crime and maintain a crime free society.

Meanwhile, the commissioner of police, CP Umar Gwadabe also decorated 464 officers and men of the Akwa Ibom State police command who were recently promoted by the police service commission following the recommendation by the inspector general of police, IG Mohammed Abubakar.
A breakdown of the ranks of the promotes shows that ACP to DCP-1, SP to CSP-5, DSP to SP-10, ASP to DSP-11, INSPR to ASP-110, INSPR to senior inspector -10, SG to inspector -14, CPL to SGT -12, and PC to CPL -287.

The commissioner of police congratulated the promotees on behalf of the inspector general of police IGP for their well deserved promotion and urged them to put in their best into the service. He appealed to those not favoured by the promotion this time to wait for next time as promotion is a continuous process in the police force. He also said that this promotion is the largest single promotion in the history of police force in Nigeria.

The CP advised them that to whom much is given, much is also expected, that they should make positive contributions to the force. According to him by the promotion, a burden is placed on them to do the right thing always. Some of the promoted officers expressed their elation at the promotion, saying that it is one of the happiest moments in their lives, and promised to contribute their quota to give the police force a good name by always conducting themselves appropriately at all times.
