Xmas day mayhem: OKON Eket writes Police commissioner


The People of OKON Eket have written the state commissioner for police Mr. Umar Gwadabe on the Christmas day mayhem that claimed some lives of youths of the area. In a communiqué captioned 

COMMUNIQUE OF OKON CLAN COUNCIL OF CHIEFS ON THE VIOLENT DISTURBANCES, DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTIES, LOSS OF LIVES THAT OCCURRED AT IKOT OKUDOM, OKON, EKET LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA ON 25TH DECEMBER, 2013 and made available to THE INK indicates that an emergency meeting of the clan was held on Saturday, 28th December, 2013 at the Council’s Chambers, Ikot Obioro, Okon, Eket Local Government Area, to deliberate on the violent disturbances, destruction of properties and loss of lives, that occurred at Ikot Okudom Village in Okon, Eket Local Government Area, on the 25th day of December, 2013. 


The communiqué which is signed by Eteidung Amos Jumbo Ubom who is also the Chairman of OKON clan council and the village head of Ikot Ikpe, Eteidung Daniel Akpan village head, Ikot Obio Anana, Eteidung (Engr) Michael Akpan village head of Ikot Akpandem, Eteidung Effiong Akpan Village Head Nduo Eduo 1 and Eteidung Akpabio Ekpoton Inyang clan Head elect/ Village head of Ikot Obioro, the chiefs resolved unanimously that, 

(a)    they unequivocally condemn the violent disturbances, unwarranted destruction of properties of innocent persons, loss of lives and vehemently disassociate themselves from those dastardly acts of hooliganism and criminality that occurred at Ikot Okudom Village in Okon, Eket Local Government Area, on 25th December, 2013.

(b)    That they commend the police authority, especially the Divisional Police Officer, Eket and his team for their timely and swift intervention in quelling the disturbance and the subsequent restoration of law and order in the area.

(c)    The release also noted that the chiefs are very appreciative of the efforts of the Executive Chairman of Eket Local Government Council, Chief Aniekan Akpan in ensuring the restoration of law, order and normalcy in the affected areas and express their sincere and heartfelt condolences to the respective families that lost their loved ones and also empathize and sympathize with all those whose properties were either damaged or destroyed during the incident.

(d)    The communique also observes that the chiefs appreciate the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio for his unparalleled development of infrastructures in the State, and for providing the police authority in the State with the necessary operational equipment and logistics for the enhancement of effective policing in the State. And also pledged their absolute commitment to the maintenance of the Rule of Law in their respective domain and pledged their unflinching loyalty to the State administration.
