Wife of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Her Excellency Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, has been selected for the Most Supportive First Lady Award 2013. A statement from The Sun Publishing Limited, organizers of the award, indicates that the governor’s wife will be formally presented with the award on February 22 during the prestigious annual “The Sun Awards” to be held in Lagos. 

Presenting a letter of notification to Mrs. Akpabio at Government House, Uyo at the weekend, a team from the Sun Publishing Limited, led by Managing Director, Eric Osagie, said Mrs. Akpabio had been selected for the award in recognition of her support for the uncommon transformation agenda of her husband, Governor Godswill Akpabio. “She is the uncommon wife beside the uncommon transformer of the state” Osagie said.

He added that Mrs. Akpabio had been selected after carefully reviewing the impact of her landmark projects in the area of child rights, support for widows, people with disability and other vulnerable groups in the state. He noted that the award category for First Ladies was recently created to recognize the significant role of governors’ wives in creating social change and congratulated Mrs. Akpabio for emerging the pioneer recipient of the award category. 

Responding, the governor’s wife thanked The Sun Publishing Limited for finding her worthy to receive the award. She expressed gratitude to Almighty God for directing them to take notice of her work, adding that her modest achievements would not have been possible without the support of her husband and the women, children and men of the state who have wholeheartedly embraced her, thereby making her work easier. 

In a related development, the Akwa Ibom State First Lady is billed to be honoured as the Most Valuable Governor’s Wife in the South South geo-political zone at the Most Valuable Governor’s Wives Awards 2013. The award ceremony, which will hold at the Abuja Sheraton Hotel on February 10 has its theme: “Grassroots Transformation in Nigeria: The Roles of Governor’s Wives NGOs as Champions”. Finalists for the awards were selected through a year-long online voting exercise in which Mrs. Akpabio had the highest number of votes for the South-South zone.
